My mother has had cysts all her life but she now has bigger ones that aren't getting any better. Her ob/gyn has scheduled her for surgery of July 22nd to remove her ovaries. I feel like it is so drastic.. is there nothing that can be done first? Has anyone ever had their ovaries removed? Recovery? Hormones? What happens?

My mom had this done for the same reason, she had a partial done though so she wouldn't go through menopause. She was home the same day....she was also up and about but that's cause my mom's a crazy control freak when it comes to cleaning/cooking lol. I know the cysts and the pain of them bursting was a lot worse for her than the hysterectomy.

I had one ovary removed about 7 years ago due to a dermoid cyst. I had very quick recovery and went on to have a normal pregnancy and healthy child.

My mom had it done for same reasons. She was home the same day. She had prescription pain killers but she stuck with advil/tylenol and she was fine. A few days later she was back to normal.

I had most of my right ovary removed 4 months after my firstborn because the cyst engulfed most of it, my OB said when the cyst is large enough there isn't anything but surgery that will remove it. Mine was almost 7cm, i want to say it was 3 or 4cm was the cutoff. It was outpatient and i was home within hours of the surgery, pretty light recovery.
