I will be needing a washer soon. I have no idea what brands to shop for. Anybody have recommendations for how to shop for a front loader, I think I want a streamer...

I originally bought a Whirlpool washer in 2007. A front loader Duet HT which was one of the top models at the time. It received good ratings from Consumer Reports. Last year it gave me an error code and called a repair man. He told me that code is not worth the time to fix because it could be 3 different things and each was expensive. I asked him what brand he would recommend and he told me Frigidaire.

The above is the one I purchased and I couldn't be happier. I got it for $700 or so delivered. It was cheaper than and has all the features of the more expensive brands. It also has steam which is a nice feature. It also has a rather large 3.9 cubic feet drum and I am able to fit bulky items fairly easy. All in all very happy with the purchase and like that a repair man that deals with these machines everyday recommended it.

I've been shopping around and most popular seem to be Whirlpool Cabrio and Maytag Bravos machines. I forget if they're top or front loading. I've been looking at both.

I have a kenmore front loader washer and a Samsung dryer. They look almost the same. I got them from the Sears outlet on Montauk Hwy in West Babylon. They were scratch and dents but you couldn't see a scratch or a dent on them at all. They circle them on a diagram to show where they are so they aren't held liable for them, and honestly I had to look SO close to even see a teeny tiny ping on them. I spent about $1000 for the pair. Best prices I could find. We have had them for a year without any issues. Ok, well the issues that I'm having with the washer is a front loader issue that seems to be the same issues everyone else is having with their front loader regardless of the brand or how old it is. This is my first time owning a front loader. The saleswoman sold me on it because it fits larger loads and uses less water, therefore saving energy. She also said they were better at cleaning. I read all of this on my own so it was her speech and the fact that the price wasn't much more at all that solidified the fact that this was the right purchase. All of those things are true but no one mentioned the upkeep to keep the smell at bay. The thing always makes my clothes smell like moldy towels. You know when you wash something then forget to put the load in the dryer until the next day and it comes out smelling gross? That's the smell from the washer on a constant basis even when you don't leave the clothes in. In order to keep it at bay you have to run a clean cycle once a month. They sell these pods that you put in the machine and there is a button on the machine that says clean machine. You also have to keep the door open when it's not in use. You have to wipe down the rubber seal on the opening after your done doing loads to get the water off so it doesn't smell. There is a mini door at the bottom of the machine that you open and there's a hose or something and you have to empty the water out of there. I also started washing my clothes with detergent and I put vinegar in the bleach section to give an extra boost to the detergent plus it helps keep the machine clean. Everyone I know has this issue and it is a pain in the butt!

Wow! I am thinking front loader is too much trouble... I am going to look to see if the steam cycles, and larger drums are available in top loaders. Who wants freshly-cleaned stinky clothes?

I've never had the moldy smelly clothes issue with either of my front loaders. The new Frigidaire model reminds you after so many cycles to run a cleaning mode cycle. The whirlpool model I actually don't recall doing that.

I tend to have a pattern of doing my white clothes last and using bleach on the last cycle. Maybe that helps, but not sure.

This is my third front loading machine. I use those drop-in cleaners from time to time, follow instructions, use the correct amount of detergent and I've never had an issue. I love my front loading machines.

I have had LG (when I lived with parents and IL's) and it was a GREAT machine, I have had Samsung (when DH and I had our condo) and that was awesome. I love them and next time I need new, I'll definitely get those again. Now, I have Maytag (came with our home) and it's very nice - no complaints but I am still in love with my Samsung.

I have an LG front loader- almost 6 years old no issues.

It has a tub clean cycle- once a month I run I wih bleach, I don't get a smell at all. I also wipe the door weekly while I'm cleaning.

How many of you have your machines in the basement?

ETA: mine will be on the first floor. Wondering if dampness of basement causes odor?GE WASHER

Btw, Home Depot is having a pretty good sale on washers and dryers. I think I'm going with Samsung top loaders. The washer is 5.0 cubic feet!

I will never buy a front-loader again. They all get that mold in the door, it's terrible. We have had two. That being said, we bought one of the upright ones without the agitator this time and I would also not recommend that. The clothes don't get clean enough.
