"Contingent" position

I took a civil service test a couple of years ago in Suffolk County and today I received a canvasing letter for a position. In the letter, it states that the job is a "contingent" position. Does anyone know exactly what that means? I've googled it and got several different answers (e.g., depends on a contract being awarded, temporary position, etc.). I'm curious how Suffolk County defines "contingent."

I too would probably define it as something that is allowed based on what is in the budget.

If you need the work, or think this could potentially open up more opportunities, I would definitely pursue it.

I am guessing you will still need to go through some kind of interview process so you can of course ask those questions at that time, too.

Thanks for the reply. That is kind of what I thought as well. And I intend on asking more about it when I call to schedule an interview. I already have a full-time job, so I would be hesitant to leave unless I had something stable.

Did you pass the test you took? I took a state job and it was "contingent" on me passing the civil test for my area.

Yes, I did. They actually got my name through the civil service list.

I called today and found out that contingent means that someone else has the "rights" to the job (meaning they are out on leave and may or may not return to the position).

I'm still going to explore it, but will ask more questions during the interview.

Re: "Contingent" position

Interesting.

Since it's a county job, I'd ask too about ability to be transferred to another county job.

I was friendly with some of the county employees who worked at John J. Foley. The ones who had been there for years weren't worried, because they were easily transferrable.

Newer employees were SOL though.

Good luck. Let us know how it pans out.
