help with OT

DS was 4 last week. Took him for his well visit today. ped asked me if I have any concerns, I said dc can barely hold a crayon. He can scribble. He holds a crayon between his thumb and pointer finger, with an open palm,if you can imagine that.
Ped said he thinks DS needs OT, which I agree with. He did say he is a pediatrician, not an OT, so not really qualified to evaluate this, and I should get ds evaluated. anyhow, do you think I should call the school district now, or wait until sept?
maybe preschool can help me get services? I am in SD 15, Lawerence/Ced.
fwiw, DS was evaluated for OT at 3.5- he was denied. said he scored above average in everything but grasp skills, so didn't qualify.
DS can use a scissor just fine, can glue, and can do cheerios and beads on string. he has NO interest in coloring, we tried the triangle ones, sparkly ones. also hates playdo

Re: help with OT

If you want to have him evaluated, I would start the process now. It is a lot of paperwork and there's stuff the doctor needs to fill out.

But this is just my experience, you are probably going to need to demonstrate other issues going on besides the fact that he doesn't like holding a crayon.

A lot of kids don't like holding a crayon. My mom is a retired elementary school teacher, and I'm friends with lots of teachers who have said the same. Especially about boys.

DS was not given OT initially, but his SEIT (a special ed teacher focusing on behavioral stuff) had to give a whole bunch of justification for why OT would be helpful (trouble sitting still, sensory issues, fine motor stuff and listed about 6 or 7 other examples) and he also needed to be evaluated by the OT and then the committee came together to recommend ongoing services.

The first time he was evaluated by an OT initially they didn't really pick up on much, so he didn't get the service.

It came mid-year after the SEIT brought the other stuff to the committee's attention.

If he is denied again, try to go through your insurance. That is what we do.

its not just that he doesn't like to, he physically cannott do it. but I agree with you, i'm pretty sure he wont get services, since this is the only issue. would love for him to get, since I don't see this clearing up/getting better on its own, and I know it will become a bigger issue as he gets older.

You can take this suggestion in the meantime too. Now would probably be a good time to call around to a bunch of the agencies.

Since we got ours mid-year, I had a hard time finding someone through the school district, and even through insurance was hard too for the same reasons (they all had caseloads already).

I am probably going to change therapists next year because his current one, although good when she is with him, always makes the schedule about her and how many other students she has in the area on whether or not she is going to come out and see him.

Be prepared for that too if you are having it at home!

I had the same issue brought it up at 4 year old check up. My daughter grasped the entire pen instead of holding it correctly. I was going to have her evaluated but after speaking to the district they pretty much told me she wouldn't qualify for that alone. So I stopped the process and went through my own insurance.
