Spec. Ed & English Teachers- Strategies for teaching abstract thinking (high school)

I provide support for students with learning disabilities on a high school level. All of my students are on track for a Regents diploma. This past year so many of my students struggled with the English regents, particularly because of the critical lens. A major problem is interpreting quotations. I want to start now (over the summer) devising plans and strategies to help them understand abstract thinking. My students have strong memorization skills that they have used to get them through many of their other regents (Bio, global, math). The biggest areas of weakness (in terms of the English regents) are critical thinking skills and application of prior knowledge.

Does anyone have any good strategies for teaching abstract thinking? Partically involving interpretation of quotes, making connections, and application?

Also, English teachers- please let me know if you have any helpful strategies! Any websites, books you would recommend, etc.

Thanks so much!!

When I teach 11th grade I do a daily quote analysis.

I also teach them to box the quote-say the most important 3-5 words to help hem determine meaning.

Graphic organizers for the lens, but I also have a template form for it somewhere that works well with students who are truly struggling.

Thank you Kayla! I'm going to start off with very easy quotes first (at least what I think is easy). One of the problems with even boxing is they don't know some of the words. I just have to keep helping them expand their vocabulary.

I also use a template for their critical lens. I have one student who has the entire template memorized!

Colleen, your DS is adorable! I use political cartoons every day as a social studies teacher. Sometimes two merging concept maps can do the trick! Good luck!
