Honestly, I wouldn't worry about this. It doesn't sound like he's doing anything "wrong" at all and I don't see what needs "fixing" if he's already reading at such a high level with solid comprehension.
That said - any chance you could record him so we could hear what you mean by "reading slow"??

Teachers and BTDT moms - Tips for improving reading fluency (going into 1st grade)?
The most important thing is that his comprehension is there. If his speed was causing him to not be able to recall facts or answer comprehension questions, then I'd be more concerned.
But that said, building speed and fluency is important. When he gets into upper grades and has to take the state tests and only has a certain amount of time, reading slowly could pose a problem.
You can model for him by reading together. You read a page, he reads a page. You can borrow books on tape so that he can read along. Put the captions on your tv so he can see what is being said. Also, it's possible that he is reading at a decent pace in his head but reading aloud causes him to be more cautious. Reading out loud requires more concentration, imo, and he may be compensating by slowing down.

I think letting him read what he is interested in is the best approach. Especially for summer reading, the most important lesson is that reading is fun.

It sounds like he is doing great.
The important part for summer reading is that the child enjoys reading. Usually that means the books are easier. What types of books is he picking out?
If the books are too high - you can read them to him. have you read a chapter book to him?
Does he like Hi Fly Guy series? That's an I and a huge crowd pleaser.
When you say he is reading ahead in his head - do you mean he is predicting what will happen next? If so, that is excellent for reading!

Hi! Thanks for responding- he loves Fly Guy and actually read all of them himself during the school year. The teacher suggested them and he loved them so much he read them all in two days!
Yes, he is predicting what will happen next ..but also trying to read ahead in his head to see if there are words he doesn't know before he reads them aloud sounding them out etc. I think a previous poster was right in that it probably is reading out loud that slows him down even more. I know he is doing great and not trying to be hard on him or anything like that - its just that even though he has been reading for a good year - year 1/2 he doesn't seem to be reading quicker and that is why I was wondering whether anyone had dealt with this and knew some tips I could use...

Thank you! This is helpful. I'm going to try to read with him (if he will let me ha ha ha) rather than him just reading the book on his own.

I didn't say he was doing anything wrong or needed to be fixed. I know he is reading well and I said that...he has been reading for a long time now over a year and I was just looking for tips to help with his fluency which I know is very important and is something he needs to work on. Fluency is important in so many respects and it is something I know they focus on once a child can read fairly well so I feel he is at that point. I'm not worried about it - while other parents may be helping their child to read better over the summer I just want to help my son read more fluently since he is already reading well. Don't see what the harm in that is

itsbabytime, Inshock wasn't trying to be insulting. She is a first grade teacher and I think was honestly just trying to tell you that if your child is reading Nate the Great (which is a level K) and has a solid understanding of it, then he is in a great place moving into first grade. Most likely, his fluency will continually improve as he reads more and more. She asked for the recording because, as a teacher, she knows there could be different reasons why a student's fluency is slow and depending on what that reason is a teacher would suggest different strategies. Is he having trouble decoding? Is his sight word recognition slow? Does he get stuck on vocabulary words? Is he relying too much on pictures to determine unknown words? Is he rereading or repeating words a lot to help his comprehension? When you can pinpoint what the reason is for the slow fluency, then you can figure out what to do to improve it.

Eek - yikes! Thank you, Teachergal, for coming to my defense. I totally didn't mean to come off flippant or insulting. I really just meant that it sounds like he is doing just fine (great!) and not to worry about it, that his fluency will come with time. As for the recording, like Teachergal said, that could have helped me more easily pinpoint what could be slowing him down - but I understand if you're not comfortable with that (though it could be done without showing his face).
Does he have stuffed animals or figures or something he would read to (or even a younger sibling?). You could encourage him to "read like a storyteller" for their enjoyment. You can model how a storyteller reads (fluently!) and how it sounds otherwise (choppy/slow), and have him practice that way. Also, he should read and reread the same books! That really helps with fluency (because there's less work involved in decoding, etc).
