Eta - What was your experience with your GN student in an inclusion class?

We got class assignments and some children have classes with co-teachers, and some just with one teacher. What is the reason for this difference? Is it class size? Inclusion? etc?

Re: A class with co-teachers?

Co-teacher usually means that there is a general education teacher in the classroom and a special education teacher in the class. I think each district set-up is different. IN the city, a co-teaching classroom would have 60/40 (could be less thank 40 percent of special education students) split between general education students and students who have IEPs that state that their placement is in an co-teaching classroom. The general education side in my experience are average to high students who are suppose to be "role-model type students. The general education students are not placed because the school thinks the students is behind (ideally).

How does it usually play out for a GN student in the class?

In my district you can request teachers and I actually requested the inclusion classroom for my DD who is entering Kindergarten. With two teachers in the classroom and at least 1 other adult, I know there are enough people to push DD academically and enrich her learning. I think it's a good thing.

Just fine, I wouldn't worry at all. You get the benefit of having more hands in the classroom.

My son is special needs, and was in an inclusion setting for a couple of years. The general ed kids were great with him, came to all of his parties. There was zero disruption in the classroom if that is what you are worried about, with your child being around children with special needs. If anything, they learn tolerance, patience, and understanding for people that have different needs from them.

My DD was in an inclusion K class. She does not have an IEP. I was really happy with what she got out of the year. They had 22 kids, two teachers, one general and one SE, and two assistants. I don't know how many of the kids had IEPs but my DD said that if she needed help she got it from whoever was available- it wasn't like the special ed teacher and aide restricted themselves to the kids w/ IEPs.

I also don't know if it was luck or something the teacher cultivated- but DD had an awesome class. The kids all got on so well with each other and were so well behaved (which I know was not the case with at least one of the other k classes in my DD's school). A mom friend with twins whose had one child in my daughter's class and the other with another teacher said our class did significantly more than her other child's class- I don't know if that was a result of the additional teacher and aide or just because my daughter's teacher was excellent.

She will be in an inclusion 1st grade too, which I am happy about. We had ten K classes going into 9 1st grade and will be getting 20-25 new kids so I am glad she will have the additional teachers in her class. When it's done right it's an excellent model.

I have to say I have encountered too many children who are just not nice, so I can see why they would want GN students who are tolerant and sweet children for the class.

My DC is extremely compassionate and sweet. I suspect that's the reason for the placement. I have to say I have encountered too many children who are just not nice, so I can see why they would want GN students who are tolerant and sweet children for the class. I will be asking more questions about the structure of the class, just wanted a basis from those who have BTDT. TKU

They pretty much hand pick the Gen-ed kids for that exact reason. They want kids who will help the class go smoothly.

Re: Eta - What was your experience with your GN student in an inclusion class?

My son just had a inclusion class for kindergarten. The day of K orientation - I saw how he went in and how he acted - I left and said he will go to an inclusion class. He is a very sweet, easy going, happy type kid. He had a wonderful year! The teacher was wonderful and I think that made the difference. He never really mentioned the other teacher(s) in the classroom. I just think he got a great class filled with great kids. Most kids who were he "inclusion" kids were very sweet and there for normal reasons - speech, writing...not really behavior issues so it wasn't disruptive. He is a smart kid who doesn't seem it. The teacher saw it all and pushed him and he did better than I expected. He ended reading at a high first grade/early 2nd grade level. The teacher also said he is ahead in his math skills. Sure enough he moved to another inclusion class for 1st grade. I think the only "non-inclusion kid" from his class that moved to the new class. He got another teacher know to be terrific so I can't wait to see what happens.

My other son was in an inclusion class one year and it wasn't a bad but not great experience. I felt he had a very slow year. He is extremely bright and I felt there was no push for the kids on the higher end of the class. I don't totally blame it bc it was inclusion but maybe the teacher didn't handle it right? I would ask him about the 2nd teacher and if she helps him ever and he basically laughed and said she only works with X, Y And Z mom!!! So the extra teacher didn't seem to have a benefit to him. He is going to another this year and we shall see how it goes. He is not an easy going child and very anxious (kids with behavior issues get him very very nervous and I believe at least one of the kids is know to have really bad behavior). But I hear the teacher he got is excellent so I am excited.

Re: Eta - What was your experience with your GN student in an inclusion class?

My daughter's K class last year had a teacher and a T/ A. It was not an inclusion class. No children with special needs at all. It was great for her, she was given a lot of individual attention, especially for reading, since she, by mid year, began reading at a more advanced level than most of the class.

Extra attention, more structure. Would love for my kids to be in an inclusion class.
