Re: To ensure every child 'wins', Ontario athletic association removes ball from soccer

When I was in middle school, our averages were numerical, and every quarter they had an assembly to give out bumper stickers to those who made the honor roll. The top 10 averages were announced in front of the auditorium, and your pictures were posted in the hallway for that quarter. You bet I wanted to be one of those top 10 so I worked my @ss off!

By the time I got to high school, they changed numerical grades to letters, eliminating any competition. Needless to say the motivation was not the same.

I'm at a loss.

I totally understand wanting to cultivate a competition-free environment, but I don't see soccer as being the correct forum to do so Chat Icon

I cannot get with this school of thought. Everyone makes the team, no one can excel, no tryouts, etc. Where is the motivation to want to practice and be better, when 'everyone wins'? This is such nonsense.

To ensure every child 'wins', Ontario athletic association removes ball from soccer

This kind of thinking really saddens me.

Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose. It's a part of growing up and life from birth until we die.

Not everyone is going to be "special" - because if everyone was, than no one would be. Sometimes children will try a sport or activity and find out it's not for them. The important thing is to encourage them and let them know it's okay to not be the best at every.single.thing.

Taking away competition and giving everyone ribbons is creating young people who feel they are entitled to EVERYTHING. The kid who gets a trophy for a sub-par performance in a sport will leave school believing they are entitled to a $100K a year job because they've never been told to try harder. Their lackluster effort has been applauded and their mediocrity seen as 1st place.

We need to prepare our young people for the REAL WORLD and stop being afraid to teach them how to pick themselves up when they fall. This kind of mentality that we are afraid of hurting feelings and acting as if all children are super-fragile is doing a serious disservice to them.

I can only hope by the responses in this thread that we can turn this way of thinking and sense of entitlement around. This is just getting absurd.

This kind of crap drives me insane. We are creating a society of people who when they grow up have no idea how to handle setbacks, disappointment, and loss.......,.....which is a very real and normal part of life. It's ridiculous. In life, not everyone is a winner, not everyone comes out on top. Kids NEED to learn that. Things don't always go your way........that's life, get over it.

This whole of idea of taking the competition out of sports is insanity. So stupid, no winning, no losing, everyone gets a trophy, blah, blah, blah. Moronic on every level.

ETA,..........life is a competition. ALL the time. You compete to win the girl/guy you like, to get into the school you want, to get the job you want, to get promoted and make more money. You're always in competition with the guy next to you. Why on earth would anyone teach kids to not compete???!!! It's not a bad thing, it's survival of the fittest and what pushes people to work harder and achieve more. Life isn't fair and equal..........that's a lesson kids need to have drilled into their heads. We're creating a whole group of self entitled brats these days.

"We want our children to grow up learning that sport is not about competition, rather it's about using your imagination. If you imagine you're good at soccer, then, you are."

Really? Because when I sign my kid up for soccer I want them to learn SOCCER which is played with a rules, positions and a BALL.

Indeed you're correct. I did a quick google search but didn't look too closely! However, there IS in fact a soccer league in Canada that doesn't keep score for pretty much the reasons stated in this piece. That's actually why the satirical piece was written.

Here is a link to that story

The fact that it is so believable is still rather sad in my opinion and rather telling of how kids are being raised today.
