First grade was harder then k, for me.

She went in like a superstar, no looking back. My youngest starts nursery and it's a tough day for me.

They are growing up, it's tough to explain.

I cry for several reasons

- since I became a mom I have turned into a complete sap so I cry at a lot of things!
- I am a WAHM so I am my child's first point of contact for everything since birth - I have in home babysitters but the kids still come to me if they need comfort
- I cry because I worry - will my DS remember to go to the bathroom on time or will he continue playing until the very last minute and then he will have to wait to get the teachers attention before he can go
- I cry because it feels SO weird to me to be dropping off my child somewhere for an entire day - I know this is beyond strange to some people but I still feel its weird and my DD is going into second grade
_ I cry because I worry about someone bullying them and them having to sit all day in school scared or confused as to what is going on
- I cry for insane reasons such as "will my DS be able to open his yogurt tube and if not will snack time be over by the time the teacher can get to him"
_ I cry because when my kids fall and hurt themselves the only real source of comfort to them is me - thats just the way it is and I wont be there when that happens
_ I cry especially hard for kindergarten as its such a long day and it will be longest that my kids will have been away from me every
_ I cry now since Newtown CT as its a real worry for me that an atrocity like that could happen in my childs school
- I cry because I just LOVE these little beings to the depths of my soul and beyond and I miss them when they are gone :(

PS My kids NEVER see me cry - never, ever...I wear my sunglasses for days like this and do my crying in the parking lot and in the way home. Its all positive as far as they are concerned.

EXACTLY all of this!!! I couldn't have said it better!

My oldest DD will be starting Nursery school on Thursday (only 2x a week for 2.5 hrs) and I wanted to cry during orientation. I've had a pit in my stomach about it off and on for days now. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I know she'll be fine and it will be GREAT for her- but I'll still cry.

I don't cry. I'm not really one to cry, love my kids, recognize the big shift and am filled with emotion as they grow and reach new milestones but it is all happy stuff.

I don't remember crying for either of my kids but they also were in daycare from 12 weeks.
I have cried about other things so I don't think it is odd to cry about things your children does.
I don't get the parents though who have made their children their entire life that they can't imagine being away from them.
Our job as parents is to raise them in the way that they can go into the world as independent, self-sufficient adults. We need for them to know that there is more to our own lives then just them.

Yes but at a mere 5 years old they aren't yet self sufficient adults, they are still little and just really starting to become independent little people..

My children are the biggest part of my life, not ashamed to admit it. I've been a SAHM for seven years and yes, my children have become my whole world. I have things outside of them that I love (going to school to become a nurse, running, my awesome DH etc) but when you are home every single day with your kids, it is a hard separation for some. I cried like a baby when my first started kindergarten because like others said, it's 40 hours/week of someone else taking over. I knew in my heart he'd love school (and he went to pre-k and loved it, no worries there) and that his teachers were excellent, but there is still that part of you that aches when it happens.

As the days went on, I adjusted and knew he was in a great place with great people. But it doesn't mean that the separation is easy for all of us. My "job" for 7 years was being with him. Being his first teacher and he was my little buddy who did everything with me. I'm sure I'll cry when ryan starts next year and I'm sure I'll bawl when my last baby starts 5 years from now...but I'll also smile and know I've raised smart and well adjusted little guys who will love school. Hope this helps explain my viewpoint (which I know many others share).

Re: For Parents: This might be a stupid a question, but why do you cry...

1st day of K was today. I didn't cry.

My son is ready for school and after the past month, i'm ready for him to be in school. He's ready for more.

He was excited to go and therefore i was excited. No tears from me.

Although it does make me sad that those 5 years have flown by. Now i feel like it will go even faster now that he's in school full time. Chat Icon

Re: For Parents: This might be a stupid a question, but why do you cry...

My DD has been in day care since she was 7 months old. She had a full time babysitter for 3 months prior to that (before I fired the animal). Last year she went to pre-k and I didn't cry, I was excited for her to be in a proper school environment with structure and learning and friends that will stay with her hopefully for the next decade if not a lifetime, in addition to the 8 hours of playing that she was used to.

She started kindergarten on Friday and I cried like a baby.

My first born got out of bed, washed up and got dressed just as we had discussed she would the night before. When I helped her straighten her uniform I cried.. my baby is no more.

She picked a bow for her hair that matched her uniform (this is brand new - she usually prefers 'rainbow' colors). She's thinking like me now. I cried.

I took her picture outside the house and she was so happy and eager, and I was so bleary eyed that I didn't notice my picture was blurry.

And then I walked her to school and she ran right up to her teacher and left me. She has NEVER just left me before. She has clung to my leg on 95% of drop offs in her life. She's always been a little bit needy. Do I want her to be needy? No, not at all. But it's who she is. Who she was. And now she's confident enough to go on without me. I cried. I'm crying now.

I'm so proud of my little girl. I want her to be confident and strong and grow up and be self assured. But being the ONE they turn to is a pretty powerful and awesome feeling as well. That stage is ending. And it's great for her. And I'm sad for me.

I cried for lots of reasons. Because she didn't Chat Icon, because she's getting bigger, because I'm getting older -lol, because my itty bitty preemie 4 lb baby is now this big (little) girl who is becoming more and more independent with each day that passes and it's absolutely bittersweet. Chat Icon Chat Icon to all the moms who were crying today...I was one of them. Its kind of embarrassing at this stage as I have no control over it...I was good with DD who is in 2nd grade but cried like a baby for my DS who started Pre K todayChat Icon It didn't help that our pre k program ( scope) was completely disorganized and all over the place so I barely knew who his teacher was...I left there feeling sad. I am hoping for a better day tomorrow and he came out to me with a big smile on his face and had fun so thats all that matters.

This is only the beginning! Chat Icon I cry about everything lol. My son's 8th grade moving up ceremony, made it all the way through, no tears. Then when the Principal was speaking to my son after, wishing him well, etc. I couldn't hold back. Heck, we went on the Disney Cruise last week, and the staff members all line up and clap when they announce your family name and you walk in. I had known they do this, prepared myself that I wasn't going to get emotional, and I still cried! The lady trying to help us after we walked through probably thought I was nuts Chat Icon Chat Icon

But, it's OKAY to cry, even if no one else is Chat Icon Chat Icon

Aw so true! I think I used to be expressive as far as emotions but I kind of stopped. I think I'm still emotional but internalize it more or something. Who knows. I felt a little silly because the other two neighbor moms didn't seem weepy lol

I can't wait until 3:45!

And no one should feel bad for not being sad - I'm pretty sure in a few weeks, I will love it Chat Icon

I put my almost 4 year old on the bus today for the first time for pre-k but i didn't cry. He's also been in daycare since he's 11 weeks, but it's the first time i didn't drop him off. I was mostly excited for him because he couldn't wait to get on that school bus!! I get the reasons everyone has. it's like crying at a wedding.

Re: For Parents: This might be a stupid a question, but why do you cry...

I'm a cryer.

I cry over a lot of things. I'm a sap.

I cried when my boys went to Nursery. Not pre-k (cause it was the same school/ same friends).

Then I cried again for Kindergarten (new big school/ new friends).

I haven't cried since...because it's old shoe for them now.Chat Icon

They are in 3rd and 6th grade. It DOES get easier as they get older.

BUT...come next September, I will be a hot ass mess when my son starts Middle School.

I guess I just feel for them...starting someplace new. Making their way. Making new friends.

I cry...they practically dance their way into their classrooms every September. Chat Icon

For Parents: This might be a stupid a question, but why do you cry...

I think more often than not it's harder on the parents than it is on the kids! Chat Icon

Most of the posts I've seen on my FB newsfeed are how their kids went off on the bus or into the school without so much as a blink of an eye! I think from a parent's perspective it's bittersweet. On one hand their little ones are growing up and that's a great, beautiful thing! But on the other, their babies are growing up and will need them less more and more. I'm sure that's got to sting a little.

Its very beautiful and poignant. Think of a sweet movie of life. When you look back on it...Putting your child on a bus for the first time or that Butterfly Kisses song. A serious rite of passage. A little step forward of independence.... You can tell Im one of those parents!! Ha ha

This morning was even harder than I imagined. I cried allllll morning before Emerson woke up. I held it together for her but once she climbed into the bus I lost it. Bad. Hysterical nonstop crying. I hated watching her drive off. My heart broke. Then to walk into a quiet house.......so lonely. Longest, hardest day. Counting the minutes until she's home at 4. Hope tomorrow is a little easier and I hope she had an awesome day. Can't wait to hear all about it.
