Star program
My husband and I just bought our house is may and at that point it was too late to apply for star so we want to now apply for it for next year. Does anyone know how it works, I know now everyone has to apply through the state but when we tried to do that they told us that since we never applies before we had to apply through the town. Do I just dropped off my application today to the town and asked her if I still have to apply through tr state. The clerk said that I may have to next year because the star program is a year in advance. Does this mean that I am applying starting January 2014 or January 2015? Also does anyone know of I have to apply through the state also and when would I be able to do that? Any advice will help! TIA!

I live in Nassau so I used this:

I did not apply to the state. I was told this was all I had to do. You should receive a confirmation letter.
Your reduction should take place in 2015.

Okay thank you so much! So for 2014 I'm still gonna pay the full amount in taxes, correct? And then starting 2015 my taxes should go down? Sorry I'm so clueless when it comes to this stuff!

Star program
For whats its worth, everybody has to enroll in star starting now for this year. I purchased in April and I'm able to update the states record my info. I was confused weather to go to town hall with the AP form or just go to the website. I called Taxation dept and they said i can simply renew Star since it's existing for the property. I would try to do the same.

Re: Star program
We bought last year in November, and our realtor gave us the necessary forms and then after we filled it out, they sent them through for us. Because of Sandy, the deadline was until April (I think), so we had a bit more time, but otherwise, I think it was due end of year.

Yes, 2014 you will pay the full amount for taxes. 2015 taxes *should* go down, but keep in mind if your taxes go up for 2015 more that the STAR exemption amount that you could be paying the same or more.
Probably won't happen, but be aware. Good luck!

You have to file for STAR with the county when you buy a house but everyone is now required to register with the state... that requirement is new (like within the last couple of weeks they announced it). they are sending out letters with instructions for this. Apparently this is not they can ensure people are not getting more than one start deduction on more than one resident
