MaterniT 21
We did this test with my DD and were able to find out the sex.
Does anyone know if theyre able to determine genders of twins by this test?

i would think so. but couldn't you also just wait for the sonogram? or do you find out earlier with this test?

I was told no. I was pregnant with twins up until 9 weeks. My OB said that it wasn't possible to get gender results clearly from the test. Since I had a loss at 9 weeks they made me wait until almost 13 weeks before I had the bloodwork drawn to make sure it was accurate in its results.

Its a noninvasive blood test in lieu of an amnio or CVS. I had mine last pregnancy at 15 weeks.

Maternit21 is NOT in lieu of CVS or amino--it is a screening test and is NOT considered diagnostic. It looks for trisomy 21,18 and 13 like the first trimester screen additionally, it looks for sex chromosome abnormalities. It does not look for the various genetic diseases that amino and CVS look for--I spoke to both my OB and genetic counselor about the test and they both stated that it is standard for a woman to have the first trimester screen or Maternity21 (or a similar test since now there are a few different companies) since they are both screening tests and could potentially give conflicting results.

Re: MaterniT 21
You would be able to tell if theres at least one boy in there...(if the y chromosome is detected). If no y detected at all, it's 2 girls. HTH. But if Y is detected it could be 2 boys or 1, don't think theres an exact way of knowing simply through blood.
And mine told me the gender at 11 weeks!

From what I know gender results are over 99% accurate...

We had ours done at 22 weeks. DD had a persistent right umbilical vein and that could be a marker for Downs Syndrome.

Re: MaterniT 21
Is there a reason to take this test? When I had my first, I didn't hear of this. I will be 35 when I deliver dc 2 so I am not sure if that matters.
Also, does insurance cover this test or is it additional $$$?

My OB told me that because I am 35 or older I qualify for this if I want it. Insurance covers most of it since I qualify but I have to pay like $250 out of pocket plus a lab fee or something.

Re: MaterniT 21
You can have this test done around 10 weeks and later...
I had it for this baby since I had a prior ectopic and was considered advanced maternal age (I'm 35). I think my age alone qualified me for it.
My insurance covered everything and there was no out of pocket cost. I would call the actual MaterniT21 headquarters to see what they'll cover. Some insurances do not cover it because its not yet FDA approved (but it was pending approval when I was tested back in January). It costs over 2K without insurance.
The test tests for trisomy 13, 18 and 21 along with Turner syndrome, hence the gender being known since Turner only affects women. I believe if they find y chromosome then further testing for turners is done. I was researching info on the test months ago and there was only one person who said gender was wrong but I know if they find y chromosome it's like 99.9%. In rarer instance they could say "girl" but the blood sample wasn't large enough to locate Y chromosome. But I believe that hardly ever happens.
