nassau univ. med. center - water birth
Hi,
I am newly pregnant and am starting research on hospitals/birthing centers that offer water birthing tubs. So far it seems as though the only place that offers a water birth is Nassau University Medical Center. I am hoping to find some referrals for female doctors who deliver at NUMC, and also whether women have had positive or negative experiences there.
I am also considering South Nassau and would be appreciative of any reviews. Thank you!

You are right, this is the only birthing tub in LI. I believe that the only providers who use the tub are Gaia Midwives. I did not use them (not covered by my insurance), but they seemed great. I know others on this board have used them also.

Thanks, I have the same problem regarding insurance. Also, I'm not sure if I want to use a midwife or an OB (I only want a female OB). I can't seem to find anyone else besides Gaia who deliver at NUMC. It's very frustrating that there aren't more options out there for women who want to have water births.

I took a tour with them, and they said flat out that they were the only ones who deliver in the tubs; that no docs do it. :( Did you talk to them about the insurance issue? I agree... it is totally frustrating. I used Melanie Summersille, midwife at Garden City OB.GYN. Would recommend her without hesitation. I would go midwife all the way, unless you are high risk.

my friend tried to delivery at nassau via water birth...she said the water was too cold for her and she had to get out...just keep in mind things dont always go according to your birth plan!

My BFF used those midwives and loved them. However, I don't believe they are taking insurance anymore. I thought NUMC was disgusting when I went to visit. There was no security and honestly I could have walked right out with a baby if the momma was in the bathroom. My friend had a private room, but the shower didn't work and the tv didn't either. I wouldn't want to deliver there if they paid me. If you are dead set on a midwife, check out stonybrook. If you are dead set on water, I believe Roosevelt Hospital in NYC allows for laboring in the tub, not actual deliver and so does a hospital in Brooklyn

I don't know anything about birthing tubs, but I delivered at south Nassau and thought everyone was great. I also love my OB and she is female. FM me if you'd like her info!
