Opting out of Common Core Testing
I know a few families that will be opting out of the CC Testing that is coming next week - my husband is dead set against it - can you educate me on what happens if you opt out of your child taking the tests (we have a K DD he won't let take the tests).
This is all new to me....thank you

Opting out of Common Core Testing
Are you in NYC or on Long ISland?
In NYC the scores are used for promotional criteria. On Long Island the scores are basically meaningless. If you opt out, you sit in your desk and just do not take the test. This should not harm your child in any way. I am hoping parents everywhere opt out.

This is pretty much true, however in my LI district they use the State Test scores to determine remedial services. If a child scores poorly they will be put in remedial math or reading. But she's right. Other than that, the scores are useless to students themselves. They are used to evaluate teachers. It's quite sad to see my students stress out and get anxiety over something that is used to evaluate teachers. So sad...

I am in a LI school district and, although my children are a few years from taking these exams we have been repeatedly told at school meetings that the scores DO count towards whether a child is placed in Enrichment Programs, Advanced Programs and AP placement.

Re: Opting out of Common Core Testing
If you are on Long Island and opt out ( 3rd grader), will that decision follow you if you eventually move to another State (FL)?
Thank you

Opting out of Common Core Testing
JEnnasMom, I have no idea
itsbabytime, I find it incredibly sad that LI school districts are bullying parents that way. IMHO That's what they are doing. They are bullying parents into forcing their kids to take the tests by using it as criteria for Enrichment programs. Before these tests existed, not too long ago, they used teacher recommendations and the grades earned in classes.
These tests and the stress level for the kids and teachers is unnecesary and I watch it effect my poor kids in my classroom every single day. Not even close to the test yet and they are already freaking out.

Opting out of Common Core Testing
Thank you for the responses - keep them coming. I actually 'spoke' (emailed) w/ a friend who is a teacher and she said 'opt out' (we are on Long Island).... she had nothing good to say about all the CC..... another friend who works in a school said she did opt her kids out last year, and now this year other parents are following, and their superintendent is against this CC..... and looks like Smithtown is having issues as well.... I need to know MORE... thank you !

Opting out of Common Core Testing
If we get enough people to opt out it may put an end to the exams. They are too pricey to print and create. If everybody is opting out it won't make sense to have them. This is my hope.

Opting out of Common Core Testing
DH is a teacher on LI, and we will most likely opt out of the tests when LO gets old enough. Hopefully this nonsense will be over by then, though.
