Anyone been to London?
I'm about to start researching for a trip for our one year anniversary in late October... We're thinking about London possibly... Anyone have any advice about which part of London to stay in, hotels, things not to miss?
thanks!

I love the South Kensington area. While you're there, definitely go to the Tower of London, St. Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey. I love Portobello Market and Camden Market. If you have a chance, try to take a day trip to Stongehenge and Bath. Both are fantastic places.

Re: Anyone been to London?
Again, I say go to Euston and leave London asap...but jokes aside. London is great, there was a thread on London a few weeks ago...lemme find it for you. Ahh, here it is London Thread
Theres loads to do in London and you could spend a week just meandering around, taking one or two day trips (maybe to the Cotswolds or something.) You should stay somewhere like Marble Arch, thats where most of the tourist hotels are, you can get there easily from the West End where you would probably spend your evenings...
Anyway, read the thread and go from there!

I agree the fist time I went to London I stayed in South Ken, and when DH and I went for our HM in November we stayed in South Ken. It's such a great location, we had the tube stop a block away.

Re: Anyone been to London?
I just came back from London last week. It was alright. It did not change my life. Everything is ridiculously expensive. Brunch at the Savoy was $265 for two! It was great, but still. We went because my sister got into a PhD program at Oxford. But if I were going on vacation, I would probably have selected a different place....one more exotic than London. Check out Amsterdam. We were there in January and really liked it. Delta is having really cheap flights there too.

I just want to defend my adopted home by both agreeing and disagreeing. London is a really lovely city, but compared to NYC, its just okay. NYC has better restaurants and amenities, and its also cheaper. But Europe in general is very expensive. You just get used to it! The United Kingdom is one of the most beautiful countries in the world and one fantastic thing about it is that you can be in a major city and drive 20 minutes and be in really rural countryside. So I would suggest going to london and then getting out of London for something a little bit different. I made some suggestions in the other thread about London...
God save the Queen!

Re: Anyone been to London?
I love London- I might even like it more than NY. In part, it's because I love going to the theatre and London is a great place for that. They have a TKTS booth in Leicester Square, and it is SO much less crowded than the one in NY. My friend and I, when we went, also walked right up to a few box offices, showed our student i.ds (we were both grad students) and got great deals, much better than NY. I think late October is past the season, but I LOVE the Open Air Theatre- they put on excellent Shakespeare productions and it's such a pretty venue.
The first time I went I stayed in Bloomsbury, and the second time I stayed in Bayswater. Both areas were really nice and the locations were perfect for sightseeing.
I also took a few walking tours with the Original London Walks. Those guides really know their material- we took a Jack the Ripper tour with a man who's "the" authority- now I forget his name. They have lots of theme walks- Beatles, Shakespeare, Sherlock Holmes, literary, etc. We also did day trips to Bath and Salisbury/Stonehenge through this company that were reasonably priced and really good.

Re: Anyone been to London?
You might have taken the Jack the Ripper Walk with Donald Rumbelow - he wrote The Complete Jack the Ripper. When I studied abroad in London, his wife was one of my professors and he gave us the ripper tour.
I LOVE London - such a wonderful city. When I studied there I lived in a hotel in Bloomsbury (Russell Square tube station) and I highly recommend. When I've gone back I've stayed in Kensington, Bayswater, Euston and Great Portland Street.
I remember finding a hotel on priceline - Kensington Close Hotel. It was a really good price and there was a pretty awesome gym in the hotel with a large indoor pool. The rooms werent great - but we were hardly ever in our rooms so it didnt matter.
You'll have a great time!

This is where I stayed the first time I was in London. Was a great location too. I think they've since renovated the hotel and may have even changed the name.

it still comes up in an online search -but I havent been there since 2002. The website says its still up and running - it would be nice if they updated it. A good bargain.

Re: Anyone been to London?
I love London, I lived there for 2 summers and miss it alot. The ethnic food there is great, especialyl the INdian food, otherwise as u know they're not known for food. Don't miss the British Museum. Portobello Road is fun to shop on. If you like Jane Austen then a visit to Bath would be fun. Definitely catch a play there, I loved anything I saw there. I just love walking around London - any part of it! You'll have a great time!

Just wanted to say that British food is really great, there are hundreds of fantastic restaurants in London from Modern British to Thai..so don't be fooled by the old line that Brits don't do good food. The food in the UK is fantastic!!!

Re: Anyone been to London?
I stayed I believe it was in South Kensington. You definately need to see the changing of the guards, Tower of London and the London Eye. I also went to Abbey Rd. where the Beatles recording studio is. Definately go to Harrods. Even though it's an overpriced dept. store, you will be amazed! Make sure you have fish and chips! Enjoy!
