Working moms and sports
I have wacky hours. I feel bad because ds wants to do sports but I can't have my mom shuffling him around to practices. Anyone in this situation? Did you find a solution?

Do his friends do the sports? Can any of their moms help you out and take him? I know that is what the moms that work do by us. Or, car pool and take turns taking the kids... I take kids to sports and classes sometimes when their moms can't be there and I don't mind at all!

Re: Working moms and sports
If I can't make it back in time, I plan on hiring someone to shuttle the kids around after school. I wouldn't feel comfortable asking another mom to drive my kids around unless I was paying

Re: Working moms and sports
My kids are not in weekday activities because of this. They are in an after school care program in the school building. If I had a after school babysitter who could ensure they do their homework and drive them to activities maybe it would be different.
I do feel that kids whose parents work full time regular hours and do not have grandparents or nannies are at a disadvantage as far as sports/activities.

Don't feel bad. If you offer to drive or do something to hold up your end I have a feeling someone would be willing to help you. I would help you if I could and I feel like most of my mom friends would too. (too bad we're not on LI ) I feel really lucky to have flexible work so I am happy to help other moms because there are times when I DO need a ride or something for DD despite my schedule.

Re: Working moms and sports
I have the same problem with most afterschool activities. Honestly, I feel bad about it, but my mom helps get them to afterschool activities. She insists she doesnt mind, but I still feel bad, but I need the help so they can get to them. I have some that start at 4:45 and the latest at 5:30. Sometimes I feel like Im the only mom in the world that works!

Re: Working moms and sports
It never ends though as I still have to carpool in high school with the sports as they have no late buses anymore. It is a real pain.

Re: Working moms and sports
IME most activities are not right after school. Scouts were always at night, sports practices were scheduled later. I think most things are after 5pm now because they know that homes have 2 working parents more than when we were kids growing up.

Re: Working moms and sports
My kids have baseball and soccer practice at 6pm once a week. That actually didn't even start until 1st grade. Not all kids make the practice either. DD's coach actually offered to bring anyone to and from practice if they needed it.

Re: Working moms and sports
My FH works nights , I work during the day .... So sometimes its hard to get the boys to any practice before say 6pm.. So it's nice when there are parents and/or coaches that help out. ( once you get to know and trust them of course... ) And I am always the first one to offer a car pool on the weekends to make up for anything I may ask for during the week.
ETA... we don't have grandparents/nannies that help... BUT one of my closest girlfriends has a nanny and they live 5 doors down from us... So because she always helps me out aI get her a really nice gift at Christmas time!

Re: Working moms and sports
It's so tough...My kids are not in any activities right now. After school a neighbor picks up my boys (and a few other kids from our block) from the bus stop.
The last thing I want to do is schedule them for a 6:30 evening activity because they will be super crabby and get to bed too late. Then on the weekend, I like not having a 'schedule'. But we're just going to suck it up and do swimming on Sat mornings.
