Cats and liver disease?

I noticed Sunday my cat had not eaten really anything over the two days. He was acting a bit slugish too. I took him to vet Monday morning and they did bloodwork and gave him fluids for dehydration. Tests came back elevated liver. So now he is on liver meds. But he will not eat/drink. I got baby food and a syringe and have been force feeding him (as the vet said to do). Anyone go through this? It is so hard to do it to him when he is feeling so horrible. Just so upset. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I went thru something similar, and it was not good. I am so sorry you are going thru this. How is your cat today?

Cats and liver disease?

I went through this with my cat Phoebe 2 years ago when she 6. She stopped eating, was sluggish, and was vomiting. I had to force feed her because if they don't eat they can get liver problems. Did your vet give you A/D cat food? It's a high calorie food. I mixed that with water. When you syringe feed, make sure you put it in in the side of the mouth. Putting it straight down their throat can result in aspiration.

I did this for a few days with her. I then got a can of tuna and she ate some of that on her own. I had an ultrasound done, and nothing was found, just an irritated gallbladder from the vomiting. I would suggest getting this done. Then a day or two after the ultrasound she started eating again. She's fine now. We still don't know what happened to her. She must have eaten something bad.

How old is your cat?

He is not doing so well :( He is almost 12 and he will not eat a thing now for a week. He is getting so weak and so sad looking. Hasn't cleaned himself at all. I have another vet appt tonight and it is not looking good. :(

The vet put him on steroids now. He seems to have perked up a bit. He's walking better and hanging out like he usually does but he is still not eating :( I got him to eat two bites of tuna but that is really it.

Re: Cats and liver disease?

Aw good he's doing well in other ways at least. Could you try something else like fancy feast? It's more or less junk food and most cats love it.

Re: Cats and liver disease?

Are you syringe feeding? The steroids can help for a bit.
