"I don't have Baby Fever" article
I enjoyed this post on thoughtcatalog. The part about offending parents when you don't want to hold their baby is so true.
One time I declined holding my cousin's newborn and he said to me "You DON"T want to hold my baby? Are you too good for my baby?!"
I don't have baby fever, and I think my friends are genuinely confused about it.

lol. Sometimes I feel this way and I DO have kids. I am in a different phase now and when someone brings in their baby at work, I am just really not interested in running over to see it. I enjoy staying up late and sleeping in. I enjoy that my kids can do things on their own. I enjoy that they are getting older and my dh and I can do more together.

Your cousin needs to get a grip!
I don't care anymore if anyone is offended. I don't attend the 1 year old (or 5 year old for that matter!) birthday parties anymore. And my friends understand why. I've got better things to do.
Recently my neighbor (doesn't know me very well) asked me "when are you guys gonna start having babies?". My answer very bluntly in front of another neighbor was "uhhhhh NEVER?". He didn't know what to do with that answer
I mean really, what if we are having trouble conceiving? People have no concept of other people's struggles and how invasive that question is.

That's why I don't like to hold babies. I made the exception for my honorary nephew, but I don't fuss over other babies, just make the perfunctory "oh how cute" comment and move on.
It is like a stab in the heart when people make these comments, and that hurts so freakin much.

Re: "I don't have Baby Fever" article
Great article! I have also had a similar situation with one of my oldest, best friends. We aren't so close because of it. The first time I met her first born, she was about a year old (I live overseas, hence the long time gap). I remember saying Hi and we sat down and talked in the living room. Earlier in the day, she called me for a sippy cup. She wanted me to ask my sister for a sippy cup. My sister and I aren't on speaking terms, so I said no, I'm sorry, I can't do that. She wasn't happy about that.
Anyway a few weeks later, I gave her a call. I could tell she was angry at something, so I asked. She said she was angry that I didn't interact with her baby more, hold her etc. I said I was sorry, but it was difficult because of personal reasons I don't want to get into here. She said I should get some help for that.
We didn't really talk for more than 2 years. We just started talking more recently, but it isn't the same, and wouldn't call her my best friend anymore. Sorry if this vague, but I feel ten times better, especially after reading this article and responses. Thank you.

The comment didn't bother me that much, but the lack of compassion did-- if that makes any sense. I gave my reasons for not being more interactive and I said sorry, but she just didn't want to really listen. That's what hurt the most. Simply saying talk to someone about that was really hurtful. That being said, I don't make much effort with her anymore.
