bath toys & mold

DD has all these squeezable bath toys, and no matter how hard I try to squeeze them, there's always a little bit of water that just won't come out. Isn't this eventually going to cause them to become moldy inside? Is there any way to really clean the inside?

i have the same problem and i just assume its part of having bath toys - buy cheap ones and replace

i would love to know if anyone has a way to clean/dry them to prevent this

yes, buy and replace every so often. I've taken to buying ones that do not have holes - no water inside

Yes, they will eventually start to mold - no matter how much you squeeze them.

DS had a set when he was younger and I thought I was squeezing them and letting them dry out enough, but no. When he squeezed them and little pieces of yucky slimy mold squirted out - I chucked them.

He has been playing with plastic cups, measuring cups and spoons ever since. No special bath toys over here Chat Icon

yup they get gross and moldy. I now buy rubber ducks without holes whenever possible. Boon makes some fun funky bright colored ones.

Using a vinegar solution to clean them out regularly might help prevent mold. Otherwise I would buy new one's and fill the holes with glue (glue gun).

Re: bath toys & mold

I threw away all my dd's squeeze toys. I tried washing them in the dishwasher and they were still bad so out they went.

This is why I dont buy squeeze toys anymore. They never get clean. My DD likes cups and bowls in the bath.

Yup, mold. It's just annoying. I usually only give DS a couple of toys at a time. He plays with them a couple of months and once I see the mold grow, we just throw it away and give him a new one. They are so cheap anyway, I don't mind replacing them. I'd rather he doesn't get sick!

I don't give DD any of those squeezable ones. I could be wrong but I think aside from mold they may contain BPA or some other toxin which is what makes them pliable.

DD has the bath set from B. Toys which is a big boat filled with little toys (cups, fish, fishing pole). They are hard plastic and you can just clean them with a little bleach any time they start to get mildew.

I stopped using them once I saw there was mold especially since she tries to chew them, we have these little vinyl books for the bath and toys with no holes

I've never done this, but I heard that a drop of hot glue is enough to seal the hole and prevent water from going in.

Personally, I avoid bath toys with holes in them because of the mold.

Re: bath toys & mold

I don't know how old your kids are, but I don't use squeeze toys. They have plastic cars, the foam letters & my 18mos just loves playing with cups (I have one that is like a strainer he loves)

Re: bath toys & mold

we threw out all of the rubber duckies due to mold too. My dd got a gift that had little boats in it and the water can pour out of them. I can easily dry the entire thing, so they will not get moldy.

Re: bath toys & mold

No squeeze toys here either. I remember having the My Little Pony sea horse bath toy when I was a kid and it would shoot out mold. Scarred me for life. LOL.

We have these guys and the foam letters:

bath toys & mold

Yup I have a couple and throw them out regularly.. Actually - I throw out all his bath toys after some time.. They are just nasty... no matter how well they dry and stuff. Sometimes Ill buy two of a toy for that reason.. or just use a good ole household item.. ( spoons... small stainless prep bowls) I know im weird...

Re: bath toys & mold

We always throw them away after a few months. Our kids tend to take non-bath toys into their baths so they never miss the old toys I throw out.

I received some as gifts and will have to look into whether they have holes. I like the idea of cups and other bath toys with no holes.

I just threw out a few rubber duckies that had mold in them.. I could see black spots through the duck. Thankfully they were bought at the dollar store
