Hydronephrosis in females

The 20 week sono found that the baby had pyelectasis (dilation of the kidney (renal pelvis). I had a followup sono at 28 weeks and the dilation (swelling) has gotten worse and now considered hydronephrosis. We aren't finding out what we are having but we think the sono dr might have slipped when he was telling usabout it - because he said in "girls" it is usually caused by "x".

Does anyone have any experience with this? I know that I am going to have a bunch of followup sonos to monitor the baby. I just was wondering if anyone has dealt with this after the baby is born. I've been reading a lot about this and am super scared, even though my pediatrician said not to worry about it for now.

TIA!

Hydronephrosis in females

I am going through it right now except I'm having a boy. According to what everyone (DS#1s ped., all of the OBs in the practice, the sonogram techs at NS, etc..) it is very common. As of my 7th month the kidneys stopped dilating and they have been stable ever since though still large in consideration of "normal size".

This LO will need a sonogram after he's born and they are anticipating that the worst case scenario is he'll need some antibiotics. One of the doctors who reviewed my sonogram at the hospital (not my OB but North Shore staff) looked me dead in my face and said "regardless of this, you are going to have a healthy baby!" because everything else on him looks 100% fine. I haven't been concerned since.

Thanks so much for responding! I'm glad that your DS' condition has stabilized. I am hoping at the sono next month it will stop getting bigger. My ped said it was very common and not to worry but that easier said than done, especially when I have already read a lot about it online.

My son was born with hydronephrosis and it wasn't really a big deal. We saw a nephrologist after he was born and we were monitored by ultrasound every 3 months or so. It eventually resolved itself after he was 1 year old or so.

Oh and we did have to do a round of amoxicillin for awhile. If needed in the future, we loved our nephrologist at Cohens Children's hospital at LIJ.

This is common in pregnancy - more in boys than girls, but still common nonetheless.

DS had dilated kidneys during most of my pregnancy. They found it at my 24 or 28 week appt and it was just monitored. Once he was born, they they were fine!

I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about this because it really is so common and not usually a sign of anything dangerous.
