Enrichment Classes
Does anyone know of any enrichment classes in the Huntington area? My son is in third grade. Last year we were told that had our district not had to cut the gifted and talented program due to the budget, he would have been invited to join. The SCOPE academic challenge program that I signed him up for at his school was cancelled at due to low enrollment. I have looked around and have not found anything interesting. Monetary restrictions aside, I don't want to just get him a tutor, as it will seem like more school work to him. The SCOPE program sounded like fun, but now that is not an option. I truly feel like my son is not getting what he needs at school. He is so inquisitive and my worst fear is that he becomes bored and loses interest. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Enrichment Classes
Are you looking for enrichment in academic areas or music, art etc? If academic, can his teacher offer challenge packets or something similar? Either way I would start with the teacher/principal/school to see their recommendations.

Re: Enrichment Classes
Thank you. I am looking for academic enrichment. I asked for, and was given, some enrichment packets from his teacher last year. At first he thought it was fun and then he just wanted to know why he had to do extra homework. My thinking is that if it is some sort of hands-on class, he might find it fun. He loves science, but the Common Core doesn't seem to stress that. He did a week of science camp through Mad Science last summer and loved doing all of the experiments and robotics. I will look into the Hofstra and Post programs.

Re: Enrichment Classes
Are you sure you school doesn't offer anything that you can pay for? I'm in Westchester, but our district did away with gifted programs too. But I pay for DS to be in chess club, they meet once a week during lunch. And last year he also did Mad Science one lunch period a week. I haven't seen a sign up for that yet, but if they offer it again I will definitely will sign him up again.

Village East Gifted
ETA: Would his teacher let him work on an independent project at school? I let my students do this...they have a project they can work on independently when they are done with all of their classwork.
