NO spelling HW or tests
I feel like our school is the only one that never gave spelling hw or tests that I am aware of. My DDs are now in 3rd and 5th grades and I am surprised when I hear how many schools still give spelling hw and tests.
They may include it in their classroom lessons.
Anyone know why our school may not do this?

I feel like Common Core has changed a lot of the things we expect our kids to be learning based on our school years. Some districts/states are further along in following the CC standards so that could be why.
We live in the Chicago suburbs and our school still does spelling tests to an extent, but it seems to vary with grade and the specific teacher. Each quarter my 1st grader gets a bunch of words they need to know how to spell and read by the end of the quarter. Then each week they have a spelling test. My 3rd grader has spelling tests, but they don't seem to be weekly.

A lot of our spelling tests have changed into vocabulary tests since the common core came into play...My Ds's are in 2nd and 4th

NO spelling HW or tests
My son is in 6th grade he gets spelling tests every week but no HW (practice) for those words. Tests written in script also & placed in categories instead of just listing them as teacher says them..

NO spelling HW or tests
My DS is in 3rd grade. He has new spelling words every week with spelling homework Mon thru Thurs and a spelling test every Fri. He also has vocabulary words and homework every week with a test every Fri. Reading comprehension test every Fri as well (vocab words are usually integrated into the story). We are not in public school though. I think spelling and vocab are important and should be included weekly.

My 3rd grader gets spelling HW and tests every week but the words are different for every child. The words are picked from previous assignments the kids spelled the words wrong. So if my daughter had a writing assignment and spelled laughter wrong that would be on her list the following week.

If your school does the TC reading and writing workshops then spelling is not a separate piece to that. It's supposed to be integrated into their work. We use TC but supplement with a spelling program.

Are they going to private or public? DS is on 3rd grade, public school NYC and he gets hw and spelling test every friday since he was on 1st grade. Homework used to be a package per week (1st and 2nd) but now they have to submit 3 worksheets (words, math and writing or social studies) every day, plus weekly reading response and reading log. They are supposed to read 30 mts every day... I got tired just writing this

My cousins kids are NYC public school and they get spelling hwk and tests every week starting in kindergarten.
My DS doesn't, it's more of recognizing the sight words using flash cards and they use a word wall to to test the students. I find this is has also been effective because after two weeks I started to ask him to spell the sight words just out of curiosity and he knew how to.
Eta: just realized the grades your kids are in. What kind of hwk/cwk do they do for reading/ communication arts ?
