Recent Oil Prices and Service Contracts

I know this topic comes up from time to time but I dont see any really recent threads so I thought I would share what price I got from Petro today to see is any one else had anything better.

Yearly service contract Premium Plan w/24 hour service -
$138.00 (was 238 but he gave me $100 off)

and

4.15 p/gallon as the highest possible price for the year. Price will go lower if prices drop.

First delivery in November at 3.89 per gallon.

How does that sound?

Lewisy was a better deal than petro. I forget the numbers but the ceiling price was 3.89 and I think the contract price was either 110, 120, or 130. Ican't remember!

If that's what Petro is going to offer me they are going to lose my business. That's a lousy deal. And since I am currently a Petro customer, I am sure it's going to be a huge fight to get them to renew me at anything cheaper. I got them to drop 40 cents off their renewal price last year, but I don't know if i want to bother with them this time around.

Slomins is offering way lower price in the malls. And on the city-data forums they are saying Slomins typically does a Black Friday deal at the mall kiosks where it's even cheaper. Not sure if this is true but I am definitely going to check on this.

Ceiling plans are the worst as there is no governing body that tells them what they should be charging. They can arbitrarily set your price to be whatever they want. So expect to pay the max every time.

I couldn't agree more. I am a current Petro customer but my contract is up in Dec. Last year I locked in with a celing at $3.65. They told me if prices dropped, I could get a lower price. They NEVER did. Expect to pay the ceiling every single time. I should have gone with the fixed, which was slightly lower. $4.15 is crazy, IMO. I'm sure you can get better elsewhere. Shop around more. Tell Petro you are shopping around. They will call you several times, lowering the price each time. They will pressure you by telling you they can only guarantee that price for 72 hours or some other arbitrary time frame. But they will lower the price.

Can't wait to start this whole process again Chat Icon

Same here. We locked in last year at $3.79 a gallon and the prices were much higher last year than they are now. If that's what Petro is offering to us, we will have no problems walking away.

And this reminds me that we have to call soon.

4.15 sounds high. I never do a contract. I always do COD. I just got oil on Friday
at $3.21 a gallon.

ETA - I usually get oil 3x a year because we have gas hot water. I save all my oil receipts. I just went over them from Januay 2012 thru last Friday and the most I ever paid was $3.64 a gallon.

Wanted to add, if you got 200 gallons of oil tomorrow and paid COD, you would probably save yourself $120 alone at todays gas price then the $3.89 a gallon you will get in November. Something to think about. Do you have an older burner that you need a service contract for? What exactly does a service contract get you?

Have to call Petro about this tomorrow. There is no way I am going to pay 4.15. I've seen on the news lately that oil customers this year should be paying less than customer with gas. Slomins knocked on my door Sunday and gave a price of 3.82 I think? Can't remember exactly, but I remember it being a good price.

Re: Recent Oil Prices and Service Contracts

$4.15 is ridiculous. Petro is terrible! I have them now but have no intention of continuing with them after my contract is up next month. We'll be doing COD this year since pretty much everyone has told us that is the cheapest way to go. We've been tracking for a year and we will definitely save a ton of money doing it this way.

But I agree with others, tell Petro their price is way too high and you're looking elsewhere. They will keep lowering their prices no matter what they say about a time limit on their offers. And other than Petro there are a lot of options out there - it just takes a little extra leg work to find the best price.

Thank you so much everyone for all of that helpful information. Seems that COD is the way to go for oil delivery.

I am wiating to hear back from Slomins on the service contract. I called and left a message because they did not have anyone available.

Re: Recent Oil Prices and Service Contracts

We just spoke with Petro last night and they quoted us $109.95 for a service contract on burner and $3.61/gallon for the cap/ceiling price or $3.65/gallon for the lock-in price. We chose the cap/ceiling price. Plus our first delivery will be $3.54/gallon.

ETA: We have had Petro since we bought our first house in 2006 - we loved their service. Now that we bought a new house and re-newed (I guess as a new customer) they offered us a great deal! We shopped around for other prices and were prepared to argue with them, but ended up not having to. They offered us a few pennies less per gallon than the others so we stayed with them.

Recent Oil Prices and Service Contracts

My COD price for 200 gallons was 3.39...I would never sign into a contract with any of those companies such a rip off.

I never understood the purpose of the contracts. Also, I am not sure where you live but Rapid Oil in Amityville has the best prices I paid $3.21 for anything over 150 gallons last week. Here is their #789-2783. I always use them.

Also, oil has been going down a little each day. Last week when I got my COD delivery it was trading at $97 a barrel and today it is down to $96.

Re: Recent Oil Prices and Service Contracts

Thanks everyone for all of this great information.

Initially, I signed a service contract after we had a problem with the boiler and a baby in the house. I thought that the piece of mind was wroth it at the time. I also signed the rate lock because thats the only way they will give you the service contract but since the repair, we have only had regular maintainance and no other issues.

I think this year we will turn down both options and see what the outcome is.

Thanks again, I really appreciate all of the informativbe responses and opinions. Chat Icon

I do it because it is much easier for me to pay $130/month than $600+ in one shot each time you need a fill up.

If you can swing that, great! Some of us just can't!

ETA: Because I paid the $130/month all spring/summer - I've already prepaid my next fill up.

We have a contract and still pay in one shot. I didn't now they do it this way.
I will have to look into it.

We have the contract to cover the equipment. Which thankfully we did because a part just went about 3 weeks ago and needed to be replaced.

This works better for us.

Who do you call when you have no heat and your boiler is not working? And I guess more importantly how do you pay for it?

You call an oil burner repair company. Usually the same one you that does your once a year tune up.

You pay for it with all the money you saved by getting cheaper prices per gallon, and the saved money you have by not buying 'insurance' for the years you dont need it.

If you're someone that can't have money in an account and not spend it - this method probably isnt for you.

Exactly, if I need a repair I call the same company who does the yearly cleaning. Never had an issue with them not coming in a very timely manner. I have what I call a "working" savings account that I use for oil, my property taxes, homeowners insurance and any housing issues that may come up. It is separate from my rainy day/emergency fund.

ETA - oil is trading at $94 today. Wish I would have waited a week. LOL.

While I get what you are saying, if you negotiate hard enough with these oil companies, you should be able to beat the average.

Slomins right now is 3.39 a gallon. That is pretty much what COD is if not better. Some people are saying on Black Friday Slomins offers an even better deal at the mall kiosks.

I renewed last year at 3.54 in December with Petro. COD pretty much didn't drop much below that price throughout the year.

While I agree that renewing now at 3.70, 3.80, etc like some people are doing here is not the best move, if you can renew at a very low price it can be worth it.
