EASTPORT - Police say a young mother was killed and a man was hurt when they were struck by a vehicle on Montauk Highway in Eastport last night, and now the search is on for the driver who fled the scene. Investigators say 27-year-old Erika Strebel, of Eastport, was struck at around 9 p.m. after she pulled her Jeep onto the shoulder due to car trouble. She was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Strebel's companion, Edward Barton, suffered head and leg injuries. He is being treated at Stony Brook University Medical Center. MORE: Long Island Crime Stories Strebel leaves behind a 5-year-old son, named Ayden. Devastated friends and relatives have set up a Facebook page honoring her memory, and flowers have been placed at the spot where the crash happened. Police say they are looking for a large vehicle with front-end damage that is believed to be metallic blue in color. The vehicle left the scene heading east on Montauk Highway. the poor girl and her family.
its so much worse for you when you leave the scene of an accident. I've been the victim of 2 hit and run accidents already. thankfully minor.

I'll keep an eye out. Our local paper left out the description of the vehicle. A year or so ago someone hit a nun in broad daylight and left her to die out here and no one's been caught yet. Our local police mishandled the case from day one. They knew the car and its owner - a very wealthy guy, but wouldn't release details until almost two weeks later, after the guy's employee, who was said to have been driving it, had skipped the country.
