ADHD signs
If your child was diagnosed as adhd what if any signs did you see when your child was a toddler/pre-k age? Do you feel you knew he was different from other children his age?

Re: ADHD signs
I knew forever, probably since he was 10 Months old. He was much, much more active than other children. It was difficult to teach him things. He couldn't sit Still and eat. I would have to walk around the house feeding him. He was physically able to do things like dress himself or put on his coat, but he couldn't stop for one second to do it. He was always super distracted. I have always believed that he was delayed as a child because his inability to attend.
When he does focus on things he is unbelievably smart. He has a great memory. He learns things easily when he is interested.
There is so much to it. If you need some direction try googling executive function. Kids with adhd have difficulty with e f skills. Also additude, it's an online site and magazine. Chadd is another resource.
Hope that helps.

ADHD signs
My child has mostly the inattentive part of ADHD. I did not notice much until Pre-k or K. In pre-K, he was just not interested in much, seemed to do his own thing, which in pre-k (at the time) didn't seem that unusual to me. Looking back on it now, I can see he was different. In K, I definitely noticed. He would often zone out into his own little world, fidget, play with the string on his shirt. The teacher approached me because she thought he had a hearing problem (as did his first AND second grade teacher). She said he would zone out and she would have to physically touch him to bring him back to her attention.
By second grade there was no doubt there was a problem, and when I addressed his teacher about getting him evaluated, she was like "absolutely!". They are not really supposed to approach you and give advice about getting your child evaluated, so she was relieved when I approached her.

Re: ADHD signs
My DS was just diagnosed with ADD without hyperactivity- so basically he's inattentive. I've known he was a little different since a young age. He had lots of tantrums when he was young and still has been known to have them. He is constantly moving from one thing to another. He has learned a bit how to control the hyperness and outbursts, but he still can't seem to help zoning out. He does very well academically, but sometimes can't get everything done in the allotted time because he's in lala land.

Re: ADHD signs
My DD was also diagnosed last year with ADD...without the H. I really had no clue until she was really in school and expected to complete tasks. Her behavior was never really out of control, but did need to be told to do something several times before it got done, which I just chalked up to her only being 5, or 6. All her teachers have said that she is extremely bright, and that the inattention and disorganization are really the only things holding her back. We tried to get her a 504 last year, but because she scored well above average on all the tests given to her by the district, she got nothing. This year, her teacher is the one driving the request for the 504, so I think she's going to get it.

My dd's grades are so high sometimes I think she is being overlooked as just being youngest in class. Maybe so but not sure when/if to investigate. She's always going to be the youngest. She's always been distracted or onto the next.

The only areas in which grades were affected were organization and completing tasks in a timely manner. She has always been reading above grade level, and everything else was always at least on grade level.

Re: ADHD signs
From what I have researched, I think this can also be one of the hard things with dealing with ADHD/ADD.........often if they do well enough in school, a flag is not raised.
I know at least 3 people who have been diagnosed as adults and I swear, I feel like DH has an undiagnosed case sometimes too.
He didn't finish college (said it wasn't his thang) and actually turned down scholarships to some really good schools when he was in HS. He was an AP student in HS.
People I know who were diagnosed as adults said a lot of their issues came out even more in college and especially when they started out in their first professional jobs.
DH has always gravitated to work that he can structure his day, that is hands on and physical. Now he has his own construction business.
Part of DH family is old school Italian too and feels that stuff like this is "a crock". This doesn't help matters.
FIL (while he is a wonderful guy) has made comments on more than one occasion that "all these therapies kids get now are just a waste of tax payer $$ and a way for the agencies to stay in business".
He displays tendencies TOO in my opinion and also worked NYPD, another field IMO that he could get away with the diagnosis more.....
It's tough.
I could be wrong but I suspect DS has this.
I am also researching other stuff too.
It's been rough around here lately. Really, really rough.
Bad melt-down weekend.
