Updated: Bleeding
Update: So i wound up going to the ER last night for peace of mind. I am having a miscarriage. My beta number was only 16, and should have been in the thousands.
I would just like to say, that even though this isn't a "BIG DEAL" with doctors offices, it is a big deal to the person going through it.
LI Womens Healthcare in Bellmore NY is a very insensitive office, and I would never go back or recc them to anyone. I have been a patient with them for 7 years. When I first called yesterday morning the receptionist still told me they would not see me until 8 weeks. I said "I am bleeding", she put me on hold. A nurse would call me back, I called back 4 hours later and spoke to a nurse. They told me they couldn't do anything. They also said they would call me Monday to try to get me in, they didn't have many appts since they were re-doing their billing system. I apologize that my potential miscarriage is interfering with your billing system. I was scared and confused and you are telling me you are re-doing your billing sytems? My bleeding turned bright red and was a lot more. They told me to go to the ER, there were no doctors there to see me. There was not ONE doctor there, or a nurse that could have drawn blood??????" I have been a patient there for 7 YEARS!!!!!! My beta number from the ER came back at 16. They could have just told me to come in to ease my mind and take blood. They would have confirmed the miscarriage then, instead of making me wait 6 hours in an ER. The lack of sensitivity is what makes me give this office a bad review. I am a 7 year patient, that they just lost. I apologize if anyone else goes there, I was happy when I was there, but after this last incident I realize that they run a business, and there is no feelings that go into their practice.
Hello, I am 6 weeks on Monday and started spotting last night. It is brownish red. I know brown isn't bad, but the fact that it is mixed with red has me nervous. I called my doctor and they said if it is a miscarriage there is nothing to do, and if I have cramping and heavy bleeding to go to the ER.
If a pregnant woman starts bleeding, shouldn't the doctor have them come in to make sure all is OK even if they are only going to be 6 weeks?
They said I could make an appt for next week, but then the doctors didn't have anything open, so they will call me Monday to give me an appt.
I am very nervous over here and these women are very blah about it. I get that they see this a lot, but I don't and I am scared. Anyone deal with this?
Thanks!
ETA: It is now bright red, and more than before.

Re: Bleeding
This happened to me, and my doctor had me come in the day that it happened. It is true that they can't do anything if it is a miscarriage. My bleeding was a result of a hematoma. He gave me instructions not to exercise, do excessive walking, no lifting, etc. - so I do think there is a benefit of going it.

I'm pretty surprised that the doc didn't want you to come in right away...I'd call back and ask if you could go in today. Good luck!

Re: Bleeding
i had a lot of issues with this pregnancy, and my doctor told me if i bleed/cramp before my first appointment (at 8 weeks which is when they confirm a heartbeat) just to call them and they would schedule me for a visit at some point - not an emergency must see me that day appt.
at 9 weeks (after we saw a heartbeat and they knew it was a viable pregnancy), i woke up covered in bright red blood...they had me come in first thing the next morning to be checked out.
unfortunately, i think since you are so early on it may be hard to get seen. at 5.5 weeks you wont see a heartbeat so i am not sure they would be able to tell you what is going on. they would need to have a measurement to compare to (if they had a previous sonogram dating you at 4.5 weeks and you went in today they would expect you to measure 5.5 weeks...if you were only measuring 4.5 weeks they would know something was wrong). but having nothing to compare to will be hard for them to know if there is a problem...your dates could be off and you could be more like 5 weeks.
its extremely frustrating good luck
eta - i would make the appointment for next week. they will be able to give you an ultrasound and if the baby is 6 weeks they shoudl be able to see a heartbeat

Re: Bleeding
It's hard to be calm when you're bleeding, but the truth is spotting can be very normal! I had bright red blood (not brown) at 6 and 7 weeks...and now my DS is 9 months old! So I'm just saying that bleeding can be ok and turn out perfectly fine.
That being said, for peace of mind I think the dr should see you. At the very least, they should run blood tests to make sure your progesterone levels are high enough (which can be a cause of bleeding).

Bleeding
Call the doctor's office back and ask to leave a message for your doctor. I had staining at eight weeks and when I left a message for the nurse -she called me back and suggested that I come in the next day for an ultrasound- I was out of town but I went in for an ultrasound two days later. I had a subchorinic hematoma that resolved on its own. Bleeding early in pregnancy is not uncommon- performing an ultrasound before six weeks may not show anything and that may be why the office staff did not have you come in for one.

I called back and they said they have no one in the office, to go to the ER and the doctor will see me there. I called another office, and they can see me Monday. It is now bright red, so I don't know what to think :(

Re: Bleeding
Before I had my son, I started to bleed and ending up having a miscarriage. I kept taking pregnancy tests at home so I would know since my dr. as well didn't have me come in.
Then when I got pregnant with my son I bled bright red blood around 10w. I went straight to the ER because I wanted to know. They examined me and found my cervix to be closed and I actually heard my son's heartbeat for the first time then.
I guess what I'm trying to say is you have to do what is going to make you feel better. If your doctor won't see you, you can always go to the ER. They had ended up diagnosing me with a threatened miscarriage, but thankfully, my son stayed healthy and was delivered around 38 weeks.
Good luck and let us know

If your doctor can see you in the ER and it will make you feel better then go get checked out by the doctor. Just be prepared to wait.

I'm really sorry for your loss and even more so for how it was handled. I too had an insensitive doctor with my first pregnancy that ended in mc. i switched and now feel confident about the care i receive. some practitioners are just so disconnected emotionally. I'm sorry

Re: Updated: Bleeding
I am so sorry your loss I do agree that it's a big deal for the person going through it and your practice shouldn't have dismissed you so easily But on the flip side, it is probably better off that you went to the er bc even if your dr did bloodwork Friday chances are you wouldn't get the results til Monday and you would have been in limbo all weekend. At least that's how my office is - they did blood when they thought I was miscarrying and made me wait til Monday for results

I'm so sorry. And yes it is a big deal , a very big deal and the fact that your drs office didn't treat it as such is reason enough to change. When I was pregnant I called my dr bc I didn't feel much movement (after infertility I was super paranoid). He made me come in that same day as soon as I could. That's the kind of dr you need.
I'm so sorry for your loss.

I'm really sorry. I had a MC at 7 weeks my last pregnancy, and I was also treated awfully by a dr so I know how it feels. I'm just happy now that I realized before I continued seeing someone who doesn't really care about their patients

I am so sorry that you are going though this- it is even worse how the doctor's office handled the situation. When you are feeling better you should contact your doctor and let them know how the situation was handled- they may not know how the office staff is treating patients.
