What is your schools policy? What grade, if any are they taught to write script?

My DDs are in a public school in Queens. In 3rd grade they touched upon it but because of common core practice it was pushed aside. I was at the school yesterday for parent teacher conferences and noticed all the classes work displayed outside in the halls and all the 4th and 5th grade work was printed handwriting, none in script.

Personally I think this is horrible and the children should learn proper cursive handwriting. However in talking to other parents they seem to think these kids are a texting and typing generation and it isn't needed. WDYT?

Re: Cursive Handwriting

Many schools have not taught cursive writing for a long time, not just because of common core. It is usually the teacher's discretion if they teach it or not and taught as more of an extra.

Cursive Handwriting

It was eliminated from the state of new jersey's curriculum. I purchased script dry erase boards for my kids and will teach it to them when they are about eight. I think that was when it used to be taught in schools.

Re: Cursive Handwriting

My youngest learned it a couple of years ago but have heard from parents now that they are not doing it as they don't have time with common core.

Re: Cursive Handwriting

My dd, fist grade, can write her name in cursive. First and middle.

I think she just picked it up on her own, don't think it's actually being taught, not in 1st grade, at least

Really, thats wack. I know my niece learned it 2 yrs ago in second & we live in NJ.

Guess I will be teaching DS on my own. So how will these kids sign their name? or will that be irrelevant and it will all be electronic?

I feel the exact same way and made those points to the superintendent of my district. He agreed with me but said his hands were tied as it was a State decision.

Cursive Handwriting

My DS learned it last year in 2nd grade and this year they are working on perfecting it. He doesn't go to public school though.

My kids are in Catholic school and learned or will learn it in 3rd grade. It was done throughout the whole year. They had HW assignments in their Cursive Writing books. They write it beautifully now I might add. I am so glad it's still in their curriculum and that they are learning it.

Cursive was long gone before common core came around. My son's class touched on it very briefly in elementary school, but nothing like we learned.

My son is in 3rd grade (LI public school) and he is learning cursive writing. He has to write a full page of cursive (whatever the letter combo they are working on) a night about twice a week. Not sure the policy but they are full steam ahead and it is going well.

Re: Cursive Handwriting

Question....with it being phased out, where will people learn signatures, or to read others?

I guess from the parents?

A signature can be anything you want. It can be a scribble, it can be printed, or it can be legible cursive. It's just something to identify you with. Doesn't matter how it looks as long as it's the same each time.

Cursive Handwriting

To my knowledge, it's not in the standards anymore, but many teachers still choose to teach it, and many don't.
My DD is in 2nd grade, and we homeschool. We use Zaner Bloser curriculum for handwriting, which I highly recommend if cursive is something you want to pursue on your own.

Right now DS is in catholic school so maybe it's still in the curriculum, but if not I guess I will try to teach him. We also may be moving so who knows whether he will be in private school or if we will be in Nj lol. My dream is to relocate to Cali!

No, we need a more balanced curriculum. Not longer days.

I think it's horrendous that schools aren't teaching it. It takes just a few minutes every day to teach it and IMO, as a parent and former teacher, it should be taught.

I never print, cursive is faster and prettier. I think it's despicable that we will now have a generation of children who have no clue how to write cursive. I truly hate the education system today for so many reasons. This is yet another reason why. I'm glad I'm out of teaching.

ETA - If my DD doesn't learn it in school I will be teaching her at home. I feel it's important to learn to read and write in cursive.

Ita. The school day needs to be balanced better. Not have all their time spent on crazy ways of learning math and reading things that are inappropriate.

I wish I had the motivation to homeschool. Maybe by the time ds starts school I will. If things keep going the way they are I am seriously considering it!

They taught it in 3rd grade but after that it went the same way the art of calligraphy went. Gone.

They can't read script either. Which doesn't bother me because I can write lists in script.Chat Icon

She is 7 but a total diva. She doesn't believe printing suits her personality. She signs everything in script now. I have to say she does it pretty well. I personally would like cursive taught as an enrichment course and think they should start keyboarding. By the time DD is in HS she will probably be working from tablets the whole time and to me knowing how to type correctly is more important than having pretty handwriting.
