Common Core math-anyone NOT teaching certain strategies?

We use GoMath and while I am ALL FOR STRATEGIES, some of the stuff is ridiculous! For instance, a majority of my class can add. Nicely, in their heads. If not, they use the number line, counting up, fingers, tally marks, touch math...I've shown them countless ideas. But one of the *strategies* and I say that loosely is to do doubles facts plus 1.

For instance, 8+9=___

So we have to break apart 9 to make 8+1 so that the new problem is 8+8+1= ___, then figure out 8+8=16 and add 1.

I get it. But the layout of the workbook page is confusing. My class totally gets the concept but can't fill in the pages. I feel like I am not teaching a strategy but how to fill in the blanks.

Mid lesson, I told them to cross out the fill in part and we will show our work in a space near by.

The thing is...they can ADD 8+9 easily. but this method is just more work.

I hear ya but if you skip it then when the test comes up and they dont show that method they are wrong. Its ridiculous.

We are touching on everything but making sure they have two solid ways to do something in case the test says...show two ways!

That lesson & a few others - is where I ended up making my own teaching materials to convey the same point but without using the confusing presentation in the Go! math book. (How they think little kids kids will simply follow 3 & 4 arrows that show you how to break down an equation is beyond me. Clearly, whoever wrote the pages for those lessons doesn't know kids at all.)

Thank you! I scratch my head at some of this stuff!

I'm curious - how are the Engage NY modules worse? We've been thinking about asking if we could switch over from Go Math. Maybe we shouldn't?

The module work DD brings home from Engage NY seems so much more approachable than Go Math, but then her class has been switching back & forth between Go math & the modules, so I haven't seen it all.

The modules themselves are not "user friendly" so to speak. The print is small and the pictures look like someone did clip art on MS Word. The explanations are also very difficult for my students to get (they use terms like "decompose" numbers). It also expects a LOT of prior knowledge. But since this was rolled out too quickly my kids don't have the prior knowledge to do the problems. For example, we just did elapsed time but there was no review on how to read the clock. Also it comes with a script we have to read from. This is third grade.

Yikes! A script???

How do you manage all the paper? That's one thing that would drive me crazy.

It's horrendous. Our copy machine in the office had already logged 1 million copies in October.

Even on the Kinder. level, it is crazy! We introduce a number ex. 7 then we are showing ways to make 7 with yellow and red counters....on the same DAY! Are you kidding me? Then, the next day we trace the number 7! Can we teach them to swim before throwing them in the pool? I can't take it, it is so frustrating.
