Long Island Breeders
Hi,
My husband and I are looking to buy a dog from a pure Long Island Breeder, or someone who's dogs happened to have a litter. We are looking for labs, golden retreivers, german shep. etc.
Can anyone let me know if they know of a reputable one, or someone looking to sell from a recent litter?
Thanks!

Re: Long Island Breeders
I always check the (insert breed) Club of America site for their recommended breeders when I do research

Re: Long Island Breeders
There are a lot of breed specific rescues out there. Try www.ligrr.org. It s the long island golden retriever rescue. There are plenty of pure breeds floating around in rescues! You'd be surprised!
What age are you looking for?

Re: Long Island Breeders
Why not check out a rescue? There are tons of wonderful lab mixes and shepherds.
If you are not stuck on a particular breed why not go the rescue route?
People think that purebred is somehow better and it is not the case.
Someone who is just popping out dogs in their backyard doesn't care about breed standards and I wouldn't trust that the quality of their dogs is somehow superior.

Re: Long Island Breeders
I have been checking out rescues also, as that is where all of my past dogs and current dog have come from. I was just curious if there was anyone that anyone knew of, that is all. I am totally for adopting from a shelter, just wanted to see if anyone knew of anyone...

Re: Long Island Breeders
The trouble with reputable breeders (please google what that means, it's harder to identify than you might think) is that you're not going to find them advertising because that's a hallmark of a bad breeder.
Ditto checking the AKC sites and getting a list. I know of one Lab breeder in Smithtown that seems pretty legit. I've had conversations with her and she sounds very involved in the breed, shows, and doing the right thing by them: http://www.forestwoodlabs.com/puppies.htm She only breeds 2 litters a year (another hallmark of a good breeder) but happens to have one for early December that may not be spoken for.
Please consider Labs4Rescue. As far as I know, there is no Labrador specific rescue on Long Island anymore but Labs4Rescue pickups are in Connecticut, a short drive from the ferry. We adopted our second dog sight unseen from Texas, depending on the foster and adoption coordinator and are happy we did.
150 Labs available for adoption now
You can search by age/sex/color here
