NYC Teachers, Question about Absences

If you are absent for let's say 14 days in a school year, but 8 of those 14 are with a DR NOTE can you get in "trouble"? Just a topic I was discussing with a friend.

Thanks

Yes, you can be written up regarding absences, unless there are truly documented issues (ie, cancer, surgery, etc..) And DYI, the DOE is going hard on Time and Attendance this year. There was a memo issued 2 weeks ago.

Written up or deemed "ineffective" due to it? With this new evaluation I wonder how that really will play a role.

I think a lot also depends on your principal. I know my principal was pretty understanding because a few of my colleagues had genuine issues- but another principal in my building gave U's to one teacher who had cancer and another who was caring for her husband who had cancer (and passed away) because of attendance. But I don't know how all this will work with the new evals as I am no longer in the system. Good luck.

That's awful!! If you or a family member is ill you should always apply for FMLA. I can't believe a principal would give a U to a cancer patient, or someone who cared for one.

I'm on FMLA leave and our union rep said it can be counted against you in your rating, which I think is total BS. Why should I potentially be penalized for having a baby??

Wait so I'm currently taking a second year leave...does this count against my rating? I went out when all of this started happening so now I'm totally in the dark.

I don't think so. I think it's only if you take a leave and come back the same year- like I'm taking 12 weeks and supposedly that can taken into account. I called our district rep and she said yes, it's something that's being looked into bc they anticipate lawsuits.

That is INSANE!! I hope they get sued for that!!

I also heard that the union is fighting ppl being penalized for taking 10 days ( even consecutively ) self treated bc technically that is what is allowed as per our contract.

They better!!! That's nuts- how can they penalize you for what is contractually agreed upon!

I am so glad I dont work for NYC schools- I can't imagine being scared to take off if I was sick!

Re: NYC Teachers, Question about Absences

I know last year people who were absent a lot were being called to speak with the principal about their absences. I know they don't like if you call in sick on a Fri. Or Mon and even before or after a vacation. I was really sick once after a vacation and def. made sure I brought back a Dr. Note. I feel that if you have the days in your CAR you should be able to use them. Working with kids we do get sick !
