Crib question- Update
My sister gave me all of my nursery furniture. It was used by both of my nieces and is in excellent condition. DH and I planned to set up the crib tomorrow so I pulled out the assembly directions and it turns out the crib is a drop side model. The new safety requirements have banned dropped side cribs--my first instinct is to run out and pick a new crib since the crib is not considered safe. DH feels of the crib was safe enough for my nieces it is safe enough for our daughter. The rational side of my brain can see his point of view but the hormonal first time mom part of my brain is screaming out to buy a new crib. DH has agreed to shop for a new crib but it is only because he is trying to avoid conflict. Am I being crazy rushing out to buy a new crib? What would you do??

Re: Crib question
I got a hand me down crib too - with a drop side. I may be the minority but I do feel that if it was safe enough a few years ago its fine. I read up on it and found they were never recalled - they just have new standards.
Eta - you can purchase metal plates and bolts to prevent the sides from being able to drop down.

Crib question
The latest info is that these are really not safe, I wouldn't take the chance. You can find a nice crib for under $500.00

Crib question
I personally would get a new crib. They obviously changed the regulations for a reason.

Re: Crib question
Don't know too much on the subject, but maybe look into a conversion kit to fix the problem?

Re: Crib question
While I see the rationale of DH, and feel that way too, I wouldn't risk it. I'd be buying a new crib...simply for the peace of mind.

Re: Crib question
New crib. I know it's a pain but that's what I would feel better about.

Crib question
My sister wants to give me her nursery furniture but the crib is a drop down. I don't totally love her set, but I also don't feel comfortable. She did say there was a way to secure it to make sure the drop down feature can't be utilized, but I wasn't interested. Go with your instincts. Good luck!

As of 2010 the companies are not allowed to provide conversion kits. I emailed the manufacturer just to see what they say. I agree with the idea that they changed the regulations for a reason. I picked out a few cribs to go look at tomorrow. I have a limited selection since the rest of the furniture has a natural wood finish but there are two that I would be happy with as long as they are well made- I would never forgive myself if something happen as a result of the crib design.

I actually love the furniture and I am disappointed about the crib- I have plenty of time to find something I just thought I was done picking out the "big" things.

I got a conversion kit in 2011 direct from the manufacturer. Really it is only a set of l brackets and the bolts to hold them on. Not giving advice either way because you need to do what you are most comfortable with. I got out crib for less than $200 from BRU.

If the manufacturer offers a conversion kit that makes the crib compliant with the new safety regulations then I would reconsider using it.

Crib question
I too would try and get either a new crib or conversion kit- esp if you have time. Did you try contacting the manufacturer?

Re: Crib question
I guess I'm in the minority here -- but if someone had a set for me and I loved it -- I would take it.
I would just "lock" the crib so it can't fold-down; everything else is the same as the ones they make now.

Re: Crib question
I don't know if this helps but I'm selling my son's old crib. He never used it because he loved sleeping in his playpen and would only sleep in there. It does have a few scratches and a dent but nothing serious or extremely noticeable. Pics are in my album if your interested.

Thank you so much for posting this-I really like the crib but I want something in natural wood to match the rest of the nursery furniture.

Re: Crib question- Update
A law was passed a few years ago that makes it illegal for a US company to manufacturer and/or sell a drop side crib. Obviously there was enough problems with them to force them to be banned. Mostly the hardware fails - over time. So an even bigger reason not to use a used one since the hardware is more likely to fail.
Glad you were able to get conversion kit.

Many of the consumer recalls for safety are do to improper use or upkeep- you make a really good point about the hardware. My dad is an engineer and he is obsessed with safety so he insists on assembling the crib. If there are any concerns he has already looked into new cribs- I guess even at 37 my dad still sees me as HIS baby lol.
