Taking away pacifier
DS is just under 2 and uses a pacifier for bed only. He definitely asks and waits for it every night. I'd like to get rid of it sooner than later. I don't even know how to approach this. BTDT can you give me some tips? Thanks

Re: Taking away pacifier
My friend cut her sons and he said it was broken and threw it out. Others said they cut it little by little and their kid still sucked on it. I think its just a case of different things working for different kids.

Re: Taking away pacifier
My ds was older (3) but we told him the Binky Fairy would come and take his binky and leave him a present. He was so excited to get the gifts that the binky fairy left. The first few nights without it took him longer to fall asleep then after that it was fine.

Re: Taking away pacifier
my son was 2 1/2 when we took it away. i pretty much decided on a friday night that we would take it away (im a working mom so i chose a 3 day weekend to do it incase it was hell lol)
i talked it up for WEEKS about how we were going to take the binky away & pick out a big boy toy at the store etc etc. at first he was wine & tell me he didnt want it to go away... but the more and more we talked about it he would eventually look at his binky & wave bye bye all the time. on the way home from work that friday we stopped at babies r us & he picked out a toy, a new blanket to sleep with and a stuffed animal to sleep with too (i went overboard bc i was so nervous) that night we did our bedtime routine like normal without me giving him the binky & he DIDNT EVEN CARE!!!!!!!!!!!!! i was like after all the stressing i did over it!!!
i think talking about it helped A LOT & still to this day he sleeps with the stuffed animal he picked out! good luck!

Re: Taking away pacifier
DD was about 19 months when we took it away.
Cold turkey, didn't tell her anything, just stopped giving it to her.
She cried for 45 min for the first night, and it decreased each night. Naps were tough for a few days.

Re: Taking away pacifier
I just did this with DD at 18 months, over winter break, since I was home with her. I started by snipping a hole in the paci, and did a little more each day. After first looking at it trying to figure out what was wrong, she decided that didn't care, and would still happily suck it at nap time and bed time. After 5-6 days, it was down to a little nub, and she was still sucking it. One day, I kept her awake past naptime, so that she woudl be really tired for her nap, and just didn't give it to her. She slept for 3 hours without it! I made a huge deal when she woke up, and then she helped me throw a few of them in the garbage. We said, "bye, bye paci," watched the Elmo Bye, Bye Binkie song on you tube. I just kept making a big deal about it, and when I asked her where the pacis were, she said, "in garbage." She really had very little problem with it. She asked a few times and I reminded her that they were in the garbage, and that she's a big girl, and she was fine.

Re: Taking away pacifier
Doing this now. DD is 2.5. She doesn't use the binky for naps at school, so I know she's able to sleep without it. But at home she asks for it whenever she's ready to sleep. She has 4 in her crib, so over the last 2 weeks I've been cutting them and when she asks what happened, I tell her they broke. She still sleeps with them because she likes to hold them while she sleeps. Tonight I'm cutting the last one and praying for the best. DH wants to make a reservation at a hotel for himself. Like a PP, I picked this weekend to do it since it's a 3 day weekend and hopefully by the time we get back to our routine on Tuesday all will be fine.

This is excatly what we did also. The binky fairy came and took it and left her a present. We told her about it for a few weeks just so it wasnt a shock. She took it well. She asked for it for maybe the first two nights but I just said "sorry babe, the fairy came, we dont have it anymore". But this only works when they are old enough to understand, I think. My youngerest is 2 and only has it for bedtime. She wouldnt get "it" yet so we are waiting a little bit until we can explain to her that it is going away and why.
Good luck!

Same with us, he has one in his mouth and one in his hand. I wish he would just hold a stuffed animal instead! GL this weekend !

Taking away pacifier
i think DS was 3 or 3.5 when he chose to get rid of his. i tried at 2 and that was a major fail. i kept instilling in him that binkies are for babies and one day he'll have to give it up. i also went through a divorce when he was 2 so i didn't want to traumatize the kid. but at 3ish we went to go see my friend and his babies and my son, on his own, said...i'm going to bring my binkie for the babies cause i'm a big boy. he held it in the car the whole way there. when my friend answered the door he gave it to him and said its for the babies. immediately i grabbed it back lol just in case. but he never asked for it again. i still have it. :( but he does sleep with a blankie every night. he's taking that thing to college with him.

This is how we did it right before DS's 3rd birthday. He was seriously addicted beyond bedtime and the first night he was mad that it was broken but he didn't ask for it again after that.

Re: Taking away pacifier
I took my peds advise and she told me either you take it away when they are young and don't know or ask for it or wait until they can understand language. We took our dd away at 2.5. We built up to it for weeks. We kept telling her she was getting to big for binkies and soon they would break. One day I cut the top off the binkies and let her find it. She put it in her mouth and it fell right out. She told me the binkie was broken and threw it away and that was the end of it!

Taking away pacifier
My twins are 26 months only one takes a pacifier. He has sucked that thing so much (only 2 in crib) he is starting to complain that he doesnt like one of them. It's only a matter of time that they are both broken. I told him I don't have anymore. He is basically going to stop on his own

Re: Taking away pacifier
I guess I am not the norm here. I waited toooo long for dd. She had it until she was 3.5 and although taking away wasn't so bad, her sleep was never the same, she is 7. I guess she never learned how to self soothe. She knew it was going to happen and I just did it cold turkey.

Re: Taking away pacifier
He was 3. We tied it to a bunch of balloons. He let it go.
He got a big boy bed that same night as a distraction at bed time.
He never asked for it again.

We cut DD's, little by little and she just sort of lost interest, she was obsessed with it too, I was so nervous but it worked!

Taking away pacifier
We had to take DS's away cold turkey when he had just turned 2 because he was chewing on them and they were breaking apart. He was obsessed with his. It was one horrible day and then he was fine.
