DeBlasio/Pre-K/CBO's...oh my!

I live in Brooklyn and the public pre-k is a lottery. I have no fantasies my daughter will get in (hope for the best though right?). What is the deal with DeBlasio's plan to make pre-k mandatory city-wide by Sept? Do you think it will happen? Also, can someone explain CBO's to me?

Application deadlines for private pre-k are this week. The costs make me want to vomit ($12k for 3 days a week???). Plus you have to start paying for them before you even find out if your child made it into public pre-k. I'm getting very stressed.

Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated!

How can they make pre-k mandatory when K isn't even mandatory??

Where is your child now? If in daycare, do they have a program there?

Years ago we had 1/2 day prek here in Queens, not sure if it was lottery then. I think it goes back and forth.

I was a SAHM then, if it wasn't free I would have just kept the kids home and continued to do the activities we did (library, playdates, museums, low cost mommy and me/drop-off) TBH.

I think he wants to make it mandatory that free pre-k is offered to everyone, not that every child has to attend.

She's in a small, private preschool now that doesn't offer pre-k. If common core isnt going anywhere I wanted to get her someone for "pre-k" that will prepare her for the common core standards she'll face in kindergarten.

This is all very new to me, I just feel overwhelmed and confused.

DS is currently in a full day DOE prek program in our zoned school that we got in through the lottery. (I was so happy....saving us a ton of money and it will be where he will be going to kindergarten and on).

The CBO's are prek programs funded by the DOE that are in private nursery schools or day care centers. Most of those are 1/2 day programs.

Some of the actual public schools have either 1/2 or full day programs but those are primarily lottery programs.

I know you can apply to a ton of programs and they will notify you in the spring.

I was told that even though they say the applications are random and you can apply any time in the period they give you, that I should make sure I applied the second the site when live (meaning midnight) if I wanted my zoned school...not sure if that was how we got in, but it worked!

Where in Brooklyn are you? DD attends a catholic school in Greenpoint, that is not expensive (compared to others in the area). She's in the PReK3 program and will attend the PReK4 program in Septembed. It's M-F, 8-2. We love it.

Are the CBO's where the DOE funds 1/2 day programs at places like the YMCA and then you can pay if you want your child to attend longer sessions?

Carroll Gardens. Would really like something walking distance since DH or I drop her off and nanny picks her up with my younger daughter.

I think so. I'm researching them now.

I think they should first offer 1/2 pre k programs instead of the full day. You would be able to service double the families that way. My school has two full day pre-k classes with talented teachers. Maybe add another class and have the teachers train them Then see how that goes and look into the future to add more classes. I can't even imagin e the mess that would cause having to hire all those teachers who have not been trained in the program then add on the cost for the classroom itself. Also the people that they would have to pay to oversee it.
