ONLY water in the classroom?
My son, who is in 3rd grade, unfortunately doesn't drink plain water but will drink water when it is mixed with some apple juice, which is what I sent to school with him today with a promise that the bottle will be coming back home every single day so it can be washed and refilled.
I just got an email from his teacher informing me that only water is allowed in the classroom because she doesn't want "sticky messes or pests in the room."
Is this a common policy?
I will email her that he will not drink water unless it has a little apple juice in it and I am very worried about him getting dehydrated, but just wanted to see what others schools out there are doing.

My sons class in a water only class also. I think its possibly the teachers policy and not the school. My son is not a huge fan of water either. I have found some water mix-ins that are clear, and I add those to his water and no one knows. So far thats been a help.

Great idea! What are the mix ins you use?

Re: ONLY water in the classroom?
My DD's school has a plan where you can but milk or water for either snack, lunch or both. So they definitely let them have water or milk. My DD does water at lunch so she either brings juice or water for snack. Never bee an issue before.

My DS has a water only rule also and I am glad. As a mom I get annoyed when they spill juice or milk so I can imagine what a teacher feels.

Water in the classroom only. They are allowed to drink whatever they want in the lunch room.

Water only in classroom here too. They eat lunch in the cafeteria where they are allowed anything.

ONLY water in the classroom?
Our school does not have a cafeteria so the kids have to eat lunch in the classroom, thus they are never allowed anything but water.

Thank you! I am totally doing it! I think we can move past "only water' rule in third grade anyway... These kids are no longer babies....

But won't the clear drops still made a "sticky mess"?

My high school has a water only policy. Despite the messes(which they do tend to make) kids often bring in very unhealthy choices and they are filled with sugar which makes some kids off the wall. In addition, the juice can be mixed with alcohol much easier than water. In fact, the kids weren't even allowed to drink water until recently due to those issues.

ONLY water in the classroom?
I had an only water rule in my classroom one year. There is no need for juices in a classroom. It's one thing when water spills on papers and books and another when it's juices. The kids can drink juices and milk at lunch.

ONLY water in the classroom?
Only water in my room. First of all, there are so many that need help opening straws, sticking the straws in, then they squeeze too hard and there's juice everywhere. They don't clean up the whole spill and at the end of the day, it's sticky and if you don't catch it, you get bugs. Water is MUCH easier. And healthier. We have juice for special occasions, such as a party.

Re: ONLY water in the classroom?
That's the rule in my third grade classroom.
The sugar and the mess are my reasons. Children need to be hydrated, but they don't need the sugar that come with juices and sports drinks. I don't have a sink in my room so my clean up options are limited. Water just wipes up.

Re: ONLY water in the classroom?
My kids are in a water only classroom.
My own classroom (high school) is a water only classroom. Other substances can eat through the wax on the floor and attract ants. Last year, due to students who had a full schedule and did not have a lunch, several students had to eat during class. I spent $30 of my own money on ant traps... it was an invasion. Trust me they come out of no where particularly if the classroom is on the ground floor, especially desks near windows. I can't imagine anything else in an elem. room without fighting pest all of the time.

I thought you were in NYC? I also thought that was a city wide rule (could be wrong though)

I taught in the city and don't recall it was a rule. I taught middle school and I found it easier to allow water bottles because they would bring soda anyway. After a few spills I stopped allowing anything but water- as it is we had bug issues and it made such a mess when it was inevitably spilled.

ONLY water in the classroom?
I'm a teacher and in the past when I have allowed juice it was such a mess. The floor is then sticky and it creates more of an issue. Some kids then bring huge bottles. I allow water. It is a lot cleaner this way. Even with water there have been many big spills this year. When I was in school we never had any drinks at our desks. The kids can drink whatever they want at lunch.

Re: ONLY water in the classroom?
My first grader is allowed anything as far as I know. For snack I send milk and he also brings a sports bottle to keep on his desk during the day. He wont drink water either, so its usually watered down gatorade or watered down iced tea.
The only request I have seen from the teacher is to only send the drinks in sports bottles to limit the spills.
