Food Prep and storage
My DD is almost 6 mos and I am about to start her on solids. I will prob do sweet potato, squash, bananas and avocado as the first foods. The veggies, I would like to make ahead. What do you recommend for storage in individual portions. Also, do you bake or boil them before pureeing? Any advice would be appreciated.

Steaming is the best method really. I am still trying to find something I like for storage...let me know if you do lol. I use my food processor or the hand held Cuisinart.

I used the things that look ice cube trays with covers that they sell at baby stores for anything extra. After they were frozen, I would pop out and put in Freezer bag with the date. It was nice because that way you can just defrost small amounts. I swore by the Beaba baby cook as far as doing the steaming and pureeing. I was able to get on sale and it would have been worth the full price. Nice to be able to do steaming and chopping or pureeing in same container.

The vitamix is the best invention ever. Pricy but worth it. I make all the baby's food into little batches that I freeze and then pop out of the containers and store in a zip lock with the date I made plus whatever it contains.
The vitamix is awesome bc when she was little I would bake apples and blend into an applesauce. But now I can throw in a raw apple and just chop it so she can eat it without choking on large pieces.
Also it makes soup!

Which Vitamix do you have? I used our blender ( not vitamix) when my food processor broke, but it didn't puree as well. It took forever and still left little apple chunks.

Re: Food Prep and storage
When we first started, i used storage containers i found at babies R us ( their brand). Once he was eating more, we used ice cube trays to freeze the food, and popped the frozen cubes into freezer bags.

I froze in ice cube trays and then transferred to freezer bags.
As for prep, I baked squash and sweet potatoes. Most everything else I steamed on the stove top (or even did the microwave steam bags of peas and green beans). I used my food processor for everything but peas ans green beans which came out better in the blender. I got most of my info from wholesomebabyfood.com. Great info there!

We steam either in the microwave or a big pot and if we have time, we'll bake squash and sweet potatoes. We use our immersion blender, regular blender, food processor and food mill to puree them down. We use both plastic 2oz containers and ice cube trays to freeze (and then pop the frozen cubes into storage bags).

Steam, then puree in a regular food processor. I portioned the pureed veggies and fruits into ice cube trays. Once they were frozen, I stored the cubes in freezer bags (labeled) and would only take out what I needed the night before so it was set to go in the morning for daycare.

It's the 5200. And if you get from Costco they throw in the dry grinder too. Also it's under warranty at Costco for life (I think). I used to use the baby magic bullet which is garbage compared to this.
