Charleston, SC or Virginia Beach, VA
We are moving OOS in Sept. We have money saved to go. We Lived in Va Beach pre kids and loved it. kind of pricey though. We have been looking into SC. My dh is a dump trailer driver and he has a degree in diesel mechanic/heavy duty trucks. He thinks Charleston area is a good spot bc of the ports. Does anyone have any opinion on either. We would rent 1 year and then buy. tia

I moved to and lived in Charleston for a while and couldnt get out of there fast enough. If you go you have to be prepared to deal with the DEEP DEEP south mentality.

I lived in Charleston. Its definitely a good place for that type of job. You should look in Mt Pleasant or Isle of Palms(right on the beach), maybe St. Johns Island. We lived dowtown near the market when we were there, which was great, but for a family I would do one of the above. Now I live in Savannah which is also a port city, We live on Wilmington Island. I think the schools are better in SC. Good luck!

Did you and I speak when you lived there? There was an LIF'er there, but we never ended up getting together

I do agree that a lot of the people are snobby.

Its not even snobby, its the deep south culture. A LOT of people I ran into were still fighting the civil war, and would try to debate me about it. I was called "yankee" often with a negative connotation, racism is still VERY VERY alive in Charleston, VERY alive. Im not particularly religious and on more than one occassion I was asked which church I attended, and then was "prayed for" since my answer was none.
On another occasion, I was literally run off the road (I had my NY plates) by a "good 'ol boy" bc I was a "yankee" - no other reason.
It is a BEAUTIFUL city, lots to do, tons of culture, still one of my favorite cities in this country.....just to visit now though. I would never live there again.

I've never been to either, but we're planning a vacation to Charleston and some of the hotel reviews mention a bad smell from a paper mill. So, look out for that.

DH and I were thinking of moving to Summerville, still might in the future. Good schools. It is about 30-40 minutes from Charleston. Looked like a nice area when I was researching.

Charleston!! We have a lot of Family and Friends down there. My DH went to college down there too. We hope to be down there too in 10 years or so. I think the economy is good down there, they just opened a Boeing location at the airport, and also have a BMW port there. If you have any questions, message me and I will tell you everything I know.
Our best friends lived in Summerville. It's beautiful over there. If it's not too pricy, Mount Pleasant is wonderful and the schools there are some of the best there.
