Yoga newbie here
Hi guys - so my building is offering yoga classes and I'd like to go. It's vinyasa yoga, if that makes a difference. They are saying all levels of experience welcome.
I am a little out of shape, know nothing about yoga, and am not particularly flexible. So, I am very scared
Any advice or suggestions? I assume I'll have to bring my own yoga mat. Is it done barefoot? Will I look like an idiot if I really struggle with the positions? I hope it's the kind of thing where everyone is so focused on themselves that they don't watch others
If you do yoga, do you feel that it's helped you physically/mentally?
Thanks!

Re: Yoga newbie here
I've practiced Bikram and it's always very intimidating in the beginning until you get used to it and realize that no one cares/no one is watching you.
I think your body can absolutely change with a consistent practice and watching your diet.
I would love to get back into it, but right now, I just don't have the time to contribute.
I don't know about all the different styles, but I like this kind because it's always the same class/sequence of positions no matter who is teaching.
It makes it easier for me to learn/follow.
I also am not a yoga rockstar by any means, and most people who go to my studio are not either.
If you are out of shape, recovering from an injury, etc. I think yoga is a perfect form of exercise.
It absolutely does help too with your way of thinking, again, with a consistent practice.
My studio is barefoot/own mats/towels but they also rent them out.
My advice is to show up about 30 minutes early to talk to the teacher, find a spot and so you are more relaxed when the class starts.

Re: Yoga newbie here
Vinyasa is a more "flow" style of yoga, whereas Bikram is a series of poses. In other words, you will be moving a bit more instead of holding different poses.
All levels are welcome. Make sure to tell your instructor it's your first time, so he/she can tell you when to modify.
I personally love yoga and when I was going through a difficult time in my life it helped me immensely. They teach you to be present in the moment and to let go of all your thoughts. You can absolutely improve your posture and get in shape if done consistently (along with diet of course). I would say bring your own mat. You can get a cheap one from Target or Marshalls. Have fun!
Wanted to add that it's not intimidating at all. No one will be looking at you and judging you. No pressure at all

Re: Yoga newbie here
Thanks so much ladies! I am actually really looking forward to it. I feel like i'm in a late-winter funk emotionally and otherwise. The classes will be Wed. nights after work so I hope it will be a good way to break up the week and de-stress.
