In your opinion, what is an acceptable age for
a person to have a Facebook, Twitter or Instagram account?
ETA: My DD is 9 and in 4th grade. Almost all of her friends have them. I am totally against it.

DH says 10/11 because going into middle school sometimes their friends may go to a different school. That being said, it would only be if we had all passwords. I was going to say 13/14, but I feel like that's unrealistic now a days.

I have no idea. My 27 yr old sister in law and 83 year old grandmother in law abuse it terribly, so I am going to say... never?

I think it is a tough call. I want to say high school--like 14 and even that seems really young.

Ideally- 18. Realistically that isn't going to happen, so maybe 13 or 14? At least high school age. I hate that though because social media plays such a huge role in bullying.

It may have changed but 13 is the youngest for Facebook, which makes it easier to say no- you're adhering to the site policy. I would definitely not want my child to have an account at 9/10. I'd say 15/16.

I have a 12 yr old & he does not have a facebook or any other form of social media. He is too young IMO to handle what could and will happen once he starts an acct & adding ppl. I think its not about an age its more about how mature your child is, how much supervision there will be & how much time you let them on it. My niece's had FB since they were 11/12 yrs old& its disgusting some of the things they say or claim to do & the bulling & name calling is atrocious (my sis did NOT supervise).

I have noticed a lot of 9-10 yo girls on Instagram. My 10 yo begs me for it and says how "all" her friends have it. As with anything it becomes more and more difficult as they get older and everyone else has it and they feel left out.

Facebook should be after college.
Seriously, kids in high school see each other every freaking day. Why do you need it? I don't think 8 and 9 year olds need it, ever

This. Each individual (adult or child) will use social media differently and I personally think it really just depends on many factors. IMO for my kids it's best to wait as long as possible but cannot say what age that will be until I get there.

It really depends on the child. IMO 9 seems very young for social media.

Re: In your opinion, what is an acceptable age for
Interesting I am not sure bc my kids are not near this age. But recently heard some moms talking about this. They had 13 year olds. They were saying all the "nice" kids they knew did not have it but that the 13/14 yr olds who did have them were ones hanging out, unsupervised and finding/looking for trouble. Not sure how true this was, but this is how the conversation was going.

My daughter turned 15 the end of January. She has had an instagram for about a year now and just last week started with Facebook. I, as well as a LOT of other family members, are on both so we are able to monitor what's going on. I also have the passwords to those accounts as well as her email account.

My son is 13 and doesn't have any of that stuff. He hasn't asked for it, and none of his friends have it as far as I know.

ITA. My SD got it in 6th grade and she was one of the last of her friends to have it. I was very much against it but in all honesty, it was excluding her from a lot of what is social to them at that age. Her mom set it up after a huge lecture and monitored her and it was fine. She now has twitter, tumblr, vine,Instagram, snap chat etc. it's hard to monitor her on all of these things because, quite frankly, we don't know what we are doing on some of them. However, what we do see when we parent stalk her is appropriate. She is well aware of the negative consequences on social media and seems mindful of them. I think you need to assess the maturity of your child and go from there.

Re: In your opinion, what is an acceptable age for
If I had a choice 18. Nothing good comes out of Facebook when the kids are young. They say stupid stuff they shouldn't and post pictures they shouldn't. I seen it many times with young family members. You say one wrong thing and it can spread like wild fire on social media. Could be devasting for a child at school. I actually have two aunts in the family that won't allow any of their teenage daughters to have a profile. One girl had one for a bit and then posted a picture of herself with a tight dress on. My DH aunt saw and was so mad and upset. Her daughter is such a good girl and beautiful but this picture was just too sexy for her age to post. Pulled her right off FB.
9 is way too young!! No way!!

In your opinion, what is an acceptable age for
i would say junior high ages... WITH supervision.
i guess it depends on the kid and the parents. if you feel your kid is too young, then you're right.
my son is 19 and has absolutely NO INTEREST in social media, and i'm extremely grateful.
