Does anyone have child with bipolar?

Its kind of an unsaid diagnosis....I know that's what he has because that is what the dr always puts on the paperwork but he never came ut and told me.(he has seen many drs before I found this one that I love)..hes on meds hich helo ALOT and hes in special class for children like him in small classroom setting.
My fear, is the future....I don't know how this will be for him. My friend is bipolar and does well on meds, holds great job. but that desnt convince me.Hes my baby(10 years old) so I worry.

My son has ADHD but I have often wondered if he is bipolar. My dh has been to a few pshychologists and more than one has told him he is bipolar, but he insists he is not and ignores the diagnosis. My son is so much like him.

Can I ask what behaviors he diplays with bipolar? My son is also 10 and I worry constantly about his future. It consumes me.

He can switch from happy to mad in a drop of a hat...even mad to crying...he also has been aggressive and violent(throwing chairs, hitting others, having fits). He is on respidone now and it definetly improves the situation, but I am there to monitor the meds and him or special ed teachers....but that wont always be the case.
I feel you,it consumes me as well...even so much as wondering about having another child...

My son is much the same way. Especially with transition. If I tell him we have to go somewhere and he didn't know well in advance or it wasn't planned, he flips out and starts screaming and slamming doors and throwing a fit. All in a matter of minutes. He is very easily set off. But this is also a common ADHD sign, so I'm not sure. I may mention this at his next appointment.

Either way, I can definitely relate. I always tell him that I hope he finds a girl just like his mom someday, so someone will take care of him.

I'm surprised they diagnosed him so young with bipolar. My cousin had that diagnosis until she was 16 and they realized that she was Aspergers (not saying it is the same for your son, just saying this was the experience I had). She does great when on her meds, works hard, and is very successful in what she does.

It is absolutely understandable for you to worry. And your son is obviously lucky to have a mom like you that thinks about his future. My only suggestion would be to make sure you keep an opinion dialogue with this doctor, especially if you notice anything changing with him as he hits puberty.

Re: Does anyone have child with bipolar?

DS is only 5 but as a mom and a social worker who has worked in mental health and knows how broken our system is, this is one of my biggest fears. I have a friend and colleague who has a son who behaved a lot like mine did as a child who at 19 was diagnosed with bipolar and also has major substance abuse issues now. Only major difference is he tells me I am proactive about getting DS evaluated now. He said he and the child's mother buried their heads in the sand his whole life until he started getting in legal trouble and couldn't ignore it anymore. My appt at Cohens is finally next month thank goodness. It takes forever to get an appt. He has had a better few months but there are still issues going on that we can't wrap our heads around.
