If yes, what do you plant and when? I'd like to start out with at least tomatoes but am looking for other things that are fairly easy to grow that dont take up much room.
TIA!

Re: Anyone plant a vegetable garden?

I don't personally do it, but DH plants a vegetable garden every year for us.

We do (or have done) tomatoes (cherry and full sized), cucumbers, zucchini, peppers, eggplant. We also do lots of fresh herbs... it's nice to have things like basil and mint on hand for the summer, and my rosemary is so hearty it has lasted even through the harsh winter!

I think we've had best success with the cucumbers and peppers (tomatoes have been hit or miss, last year was a miss!). Sometimes the cucumbers grow to be huge... like as big as baseball bats! And the herbs are easy and I love not having to buy fresh herbs in the store and worry about them going bad in the fridge before I can use them up!

ETA we don't have a ton of space. We take an area in our side yard for it, and I have built in little area (like a box) between the deck and patio where I plant a lot of herbs.

Thanks! I know tomatoes are best with full sun but what about the other plants? I was debating to put big pots in my driveway, since that is one of the only places that gets decent sunlight. We have a gate across our driveway so it wont be seen from the street ; )

Re: Anyone plant a vegetable garden?

I plant a garden each year.

1 year I planted tomatoes, onions, peppers and cucumbers. Wont make that mistake again. The onions made the soil very acidic and nothing grew well.

For the most part, I plant tomatoes (cherry or plum) and peppers - green and red. I use them a lot for grilling, sometimes for salads. I've stuck with this and it's worked for the past few years. Last year, the tomatoes did not do well and I've noticed it depends on the season - how wet/hot if the plants do well.

I use something like these in the backyard, but they are brown/black:

We do tomatoes, cucumbers, zuchinni, kale, string beans, snap peas, different types of peppers.

We never seem to have luck with tomatoes, they always get some type of blight or fungus. We tried corn last year although it grew well, it got eaten. We haven't had luck with broccoli either...

We do tomato's, cucumbers, fresh herbs, and green beans….this year I am adding peppers, eggplants, and pumpkins. However if you are going to do it, you need to start them indoors soon! Use Sprout Robot, they tell you when to do everything and anything in your area.
