Re: Another couple friend moving off LI

I know how you feel, if we could find decent paying jobs elsewhere I'd move in a heartbeat, even though I would miss my family. Living here is just ridiculously expensive.

Re: Another couple friend moving off LI

It's getting hard to be in the LI/NYC area. We are moving to FL at the end of April. When we told DH's BF and his wife last November that we were relocating, they were shocked. Well, just 4 weeks ago the BF's wife was offered a job in FL (same employer) and they are leaving mid-April, before us! We have 2 DS', they have 1. DH's other friend relocated to FL 2 years ago. Seems to be happening more and more. In our case and the the Bf's case, both are job transfers for 1 person so that makes it easier bc income isn't an issue and relocation expenses are paid. I'm sad to leave LI but unfortunately I can also see that this isn't the best place to be anymore. Were we're moving housing is comparable to what it is here in terms of cost (400's-1 million) but taxes are only 5-6K and quality of life is better.

Re: Another couple friend moving off LI

ugh we are trying so hard to get off the island. I just feel like it keeps sucking us back in lol.. I get so jelious when I see my friends leaving n buying brand new homes for pennies compared to what we paid for a home that was built in the 70's lol..
Very frustrating hopefully we get our break some time soon so we can join them all.

This makes the 3rd couple DH and I are friends with that are taking their young families and moving. This is the second couple to move to Austin. The others moved to N. Carolina. It is so depressing how much I want to leave LI.

I understand how you feel. I would love to get out of NY but I'm stuck until my house increases in value. As soon as it does, I want outta here.

Another couple friend moving off LI

I was just in Austin last weekend. There is ZERO chance I would ever move or live in Texas vs. Long Island/NYC.

There is a reason why you can get super huge houses for pennies vs. what you can get here with that same amount. Those areas that sell houses for pennies have zero demand to allow for any price increases.

Different strokes for different folks.

I kind of agree. I think there is a bit of the grass is always greener going on.

I always said that I would like to live elsewhere -- at least for awhile -- if it weren't for our family being so close by and helping with DH. I grew up on Long Island, moved to Philly for law school, lived in Manhattan for 8 years, and then back to LI again. So I've never lived outside of the northeast or far from a major city.

I can see the allure of living elsewhere. And I know there is a lot of frustration with the high property taxes and high cost of living. We live on LI, so land is at a premium and it drives housing costs up, for sure.

But there are many advantages to living on Long Island (or in the NY Metropolitan area in general). There are so many career opportunities, and we are near lots of culture, parks, beaches, great schools, etc. it's so convenient for shopping, restaurants, parkways.

I guess since I am not leaving, I am choosing to look at the positive.

But honestly, I am a big HGTV watcher (like to keep up with my biz!), but a lot of those 6000 square foot homes in the middle of nowhere look so cookie cutter to me. They are often new housing developments with no character or landscaping. Not all of them, but I often think to myself that there is a tradeoff for having so much space.

I often agree with what you post.

This is what I was thinking. I visited friends in NC years ago. I thought I would come home wishing to live in a gorgeous new house there (and we went in many and they were beautiful). But I came home saying I am glad to be home.

Another couple friend moving off LI

it is so tempting to move away. DH would in a heartbeat - i like the thought of it but i don't think I could leave the support system we have here, my friends and family. Plus I like my job - If i was miserable I might be more inclined to leave,

Why is that a plus? Part of the selling point to leave is getting away from the LI mindset

I think a lot of people move to escape the ridiculous home prices/takes, the congestion not to escape the people.

If I were to live out of state I might like having LI people around to make is seem more like home without all the negatives.

Re: Another couple friend moving off LI

We have friends who moved to Austin last summer and LOVE it. We visited them in the fall and they have a beautiful big house and they are close to everything. Their kids are all into soccer so they jumped into making friends that way. Now they have baby #4 on the way and I could never see them coming back. The only thing they miss is the ocean.
I, on the otherhand, could never move off LI. I feel rooted here!
And I feel your pain about couple friends moving away. It makes you feel like jr.high again. Needing to make new friends and recreate a social life because it really is important for couples.

Ugh. I do understand. Chat Icon

Re: Another couple friend moving off LI

I plan to move to nc, it will be a transition but I already have friends and family where I plan to move.

People live, work and raise families all over, not just on Long Island.

It's so expensive here I feel as if I work to pay bills, moving would enable me to work to live life.
