Finding Teaching jobs
How do you find teaching jobs on long island in a public school? Did everyone find their job through OLAS or did you directly mail or e-mail your resume to districts? I'm just looking into it now but wanted some feedback.

Re: Finding Teaching jobs
My Long Island job I got through OLAS.
I then got into the city by a posting on Craigslist and then open market.

Finding Teaching jobs
I work in a public school in Nassau County and got my job through OLAS. If a district has a position listed on OLAS, I would only apply through the site (unless it specifies that they also accept e-mail/mail submissions). I know that my district uses OLAS exclusively and if you apply using another method (e-mailing resume directly, mailing resume) you will likely not be considered for the position -- sends the message that you can't/choose not to follow directions right from the start.

Finding Teaching jobs
I used OLAS for a while and found that I wasn't getting many responses because I was applying for jobs with a million other people. What I started doing was looking up the districts or schools that were hiring on OLAS, went to the school or district site to get the name of the principal/human resources director or superintendent and got their e-mail off the site. I e-mailed them my resume and cover letter directly. While some districts didn't respond because they prefer to only go through OLAS, I heard back from 6 out of 10 schools for interviews that way.

Finding Teaching jobs
Every teaching job I have gotten has been directly through OLAS.
It, however, does not hurt if you know someone connected to the district that can put in a good work for you to ensure that your resume gets looked at.
