how to look in another state???

things are slowly coming together for our move to california.

i don't want to move out there and be unemployed until i go job hunting. so, i'm wondering how do people set up jobs from out of state?

head hunters?
if so, how does one find a good one?

any tips, ideas, suggestions would be great.

thanks

Get a UPS PO box in the general area where you think you may end up moving to. Put the address of that UPS store on your resume.

Many employers see out of state applicants and immediately toss the resume. Get a UPS box too so you have a real street address and not just a USPS PO Box.

This is a good suggestion. DH and I made the move from NY to CA almost a year ago for my job (which I got through networking, so I'm no help). DH is in the IT field and put his resume on Monster, career builder and Dice (a tech career site). He sought out positions in the area we were moving, and still had employers say they weren't interested in out of town candidates (even though our move was 100% solidified and we weren't looking for any relo assistance from his employer).

In his field he had a lot of headhunters/recruitment agencies contacting him. (If you are in the IT field I can get some agency names for you). I would search online (monster, career builder, etc) for jobs in the area you are moving and the agencies representing them and contact the agency directly.

Let me know if I can be of any further help, since we just completed the move less than a year ago. We are in the bay area right on the Peninsula.

Re: how to look in another state???

I would go through headhunters/recruiters.

Recently, I had my resume up and had some random ones calling me for jobs that while still in the area, were in places like Westchester and CT.

My thought was "WTF are they calling me? I live in Western Suffolk and I'm not going to commute that far".

I spoke to a couple people I am friendly with who do this for a living, and they said they cold call on the fact that many people WILL relocate for an open position, especially in the economy today.

I also think the P.O. Box is a good suggestion, or, do you know anyone who lives in California and you could just post their address?

When I was relocating, I put that I was already planning to move there in my cover letter along with the month of my move and that seemed to help with clarification.

Morning, I am in CT now and get calls from LI places all the time. Part of the reason is that sometimes recruiters do a geographical search of 30 miles or so and it will bring up the other areas. The other, like you found out, is that some people will move (And, there are even those who commute! DH did commute from Bay Shore to Stamford for a short while, we know of one person who commutes from Franklin Sq to Shelton, CT, I know a guy who has commuted from RVC to Westchester for years, and another person DH knows used to commute from Massapequa to Stamford........)

how to look in another state???

this is good info. thanks.
i can use the idea of letting them know i'm ALREADY moving and provide an address... SO will be there before me, so i can provide an address that will be mine.

next question:
how do i go about finding a head hunter?

oh, and a follow up question:
this past week, i received two lovely emails from clients. the emails were lovely thank yous for helping them through the buying-selling process. should i print these and have them available to help pump up my resume/references?

thanks for all the help
