What EI services are you looking for and how old is your DC? I think it depends on their age and your concerns.
I had concerns around 10 months for DS - he didn't babble or speak, and with my Ped. we decided to finally have him evaluated at 15 months.
So initially it was my choice, and then with the help of my ped. we called someone in.
He was evaluated at 16 months initially for speech. I had a speech eval and a food eval done at the same time and then was recommended for a physiological eval. I went through All About Kids in plainview, and thus far everyone has been super helpful, knowledgable and kind to both my DS and myself.
He started his evals at 16 months and now at 17+ months he's getting services every day of the week, both speech and ABA with more possibly on the horizon.

We called somebody when DD turned 2 and she still couldn't talk at all. I chose to on my own bc my ped is rather old school and says to wait it out. I didn't even tell him. I called Marion K. Solomon and absolutely loved them! DD ultimately did not qualify bc her receptive skills were way too high but I'm so glad I called them bc they taught me many different strategies to help her! Good luck!

I called myself when DD was 13 months. The ped had suggested waiting but I saw no reason. DD tested in the 1st percentile for gross motor and received PT twice a week. After 6 months she was scored at the low end of normal and now at almost 2 she is pretty well caught up.
You do not need your doctor's approval to request the evaluation. Call the number for your county and they'll take care of everything from there. Like a PP said, the area of concern probably matters when it comes to how young to call. PT is probably easier to qualify at a younger age than speech for example.

I initially talked with my dr when DD was approx 5mo old because I was concerned she had torticollis. I was referred for private PT and then our daycare director recommended we contact EI. She didn't think we would qualify but said if we were going to pay out of pocket for private PT, we might as well call and see what happens.
I contacted Suffolk county shortly thereafter and I randomly picked a service provider (which didn't work out, in the end we are receiving services through St. Charles). The initial meeting we had was great, we were told we would qualify for PT services and that although DD's torticollis was minor and that alone would not qualify, she qualified for gross motor delays.
I have to say, I'm thrilled we took the chance and called. I knew DD was slow to reach some milestones, but I'm fairly laid back and just figured she'd get there eventually. I knew torticollis didn't just correct itself though, which is why I eventually called, I never would've thought she'd qualify for gross motor delays.
DD has flourished with PT. She hated it at first and spent much of the time crying, but she went from not being able to roll over or lift her head at 6 mo (when services started) to crawling at 9 mo. Now at 16mo, she's still receiving PT twice a week, but now that her head is straight (she still has occasional torticollis regressions when she's sick or teething) and she is walking and climbing, I'm sure out services will be ending soon.
If you have any concerns, it is in your best interest to call. Even if we didn't qualify, I'm glad we called, the initial evaluation in and of itself was very helpful.

i called when my son was about 19 m and not speaking and had some sensory issues. he qualified for speech and ot. he will be two in a couple weeks and gets ot twice a week and speech twice a week and it is helping so very much. you can call Nassau county directly or I might suggest calling little village and they can send an evaluator out. gl

Re: EI questoins
I called at 11 mo when I noticed she was eating strangely- no pincer grasp. Also some sensory issues. I suspected motor issues but was on par. She actually had receptive/responsive language delays. I never asked the ped since she didn't have an apt til 12 mo.
