What makes a fun baby shower?
I am seriously posing the question...what makes a fun baby shower?
I know some people like games, some like liquor, and some like just socializing, but I am trying to get a better idea of what most people want. My mom is planning my shower, but she is going through some personal stuff and I know this will probably be my one and only baby, so I want people to have a good time. We are having the shower at a catering hall...suggestions are greatly appreciated!
TIA!

I prefer just socializing with some liquor.

I definitely think you will get a lot of different answers depending on the person and the crowd. I personally love a brunch shower with good food and drinks. I like to chat and catch up with people while relaxing and enjoying a good meal. I do not like games or anything with forced participation.

Booze or not having one. IMO showers are just a few hours of pure torture.

Agreed...although some games/activities aren't bad. I guess it depends on who I all know at the table.

Re: What makes a fun baby shower?
im more likely to participate in games if theres a cool prize. I dont need another bath & body works lotion/shower gel set.
at mine we did a movie/popcorn/candy prize.
And it wasnt even a game, we had an egg timer go off every few minutes while i was opening gifts and whoevers gift i was opening got the prize.

LOVE this idea!!
I tend to hate the silly games that are forced on you but I think this above idea is great, especially the prizes.
I also like when there is enough room to get up, walk around and socialize. I HATE being trapped in the same seat at the table for hours! Torture!!
Also, I think it's AWESOME when the present opening is broken up. Watching someone open up gifts for two hours straight is SO boring. I love when the guest of honor opens a few gifts, then we eat, then she opens a few more, then dessert, then she finishes up.

I'm not a fan of games at all.. I also hate watching people open presents. My mom had some cute activities - like making baby bows and writing children's books ( she ordered blank books and markers) just so people would have something to do but mostly everyone ate and talked and the only people who seemed disappointed in not opening gifts were the much older guests : one of my grandmas friends and my great grandmother..

I love that idea with the egg timer! I personally hate playing games at showers. My idea of a great shower is something small and intimate where I can catch up with everyone.

Re: What makes a fun baby shower?
well most showers are pretty boring-i like it when people are "busy" - give them something to do besides chatting (its not always the case that everyone knows everyone)
measure the belly game is good. guestbook.com - had people do an activity sheet. my first shower I had people decorate onesies. Birthday Card Activity- everyone chose a number out of hat (or jar whatever) and has to write a birthday message on a card (advise etc) for the number they were given. My guests got a kick out of it at my sprinkle---some wanted to write the crazy numbers (like 16, 21) and others wanted to write low numbers (like 1,5). everyone was into it.
HTH!

They did this at a good friends shower as well, it was fun! The whole theme was movies, it really worked very well and we had a blast.

One thing that I really liked at my bff's shower that her sister did was hand out pretty note cards and asked everyone to give advice to the mother to be, I thought it was very sweet.

Re: What makes a fun baby shower?
I always have the best time at showers that are held at someone's home. These also have tended to be on the smaller side, which means less time spent opening gifts and more time to socialize. I just find being in someone's home gives it a more intimate feeling, and you are not trapped talking to just the people you are sitting with.

Liquor and socializing is always nice. Also my SIL made me pick random numbers bw 1-30. Who ever gave me the gift that lined up with a number I picked received a prize. Also, SIL asked my hubby questions and I had to match his answer. It was actually pretty funny and got quite a few laughs.

Re: What makes a fun baby shower?
I love all the corny things about showers. I like the games, but I definitely think it should be a limit and people should be able to opt in them if they want. I also love to watch people open presents. Call me weir or crazy but I like to see all the baby stuff - especially when people give unique gifts. I once went to a shower where the only person I knew was the expecting mom and she didn't open her gifts nor were there games. Needless to say I was bored out of my mind. The last thing I wanted was to engage in random, forced convo with her guests. At least some games serve as ice breakers.
Also, in my family, all showers (bridal and baby) are co-ed and the men always have a great time socializing with each other. It usually turns into a mini party.

Re: What makes a fun baby shower?
Great ideas ladies. I think the consensus is that people are not huge fans of forced participation games, but like activity tables or optional games better.
Good prizes seem to be a must, I will have to work on that one. The movie basket was good, any other creative ideas for prizes?
I wish we didn't have to open all the gifts, but I think some of my family members would be a little upset about that. I guess we will do the egg timer thing and break it up to make it interesting.

Exactly this! The one bridal shower I went to that the bride didn't open gifts was SOOOOOOOOO BORING. I was preggo so I couldn't drink, and I barely knew anyone. I like bingo, you don't HAVE to play, but it gives you something to pay attention to and you can win a prize! What's wrong with that?

Re: What makes a fun baby shower?
I had a very atypical shower but a lot of people told me it was fun.... it was a Saturday evening, we had both men & women there, it was just a laid back dinner at a restaurant, I also did a gender reveal which was a lot of fun. No games, no opening gifts. The restaurant had a singer on Saturday nights so people were getting up & taking over the microphone to do karaoke & dancing.

im not a fan of games - food and liquor makes it fun.
If you are going to open presents at the shower, i do think doing bingo and/or an egg timer during the gift opening helps keeps guests involved

What makes a fun baby shower?
A theme is definitely appealing! Amazing food, not mediocre. I've done lots of showers, and people get SO bored. The best thing is to have everything "wrapped" in cellophane or just a bow so there is no opening of gifts. The egg timer game is good if there are wrapped gifts, though. So if you want to keep tradition, then the egg timer thing is fun. Cute prizes make it even more fun. People want to sit around and bs and drink. I've found that any games where people have to "write stuff" turn the guests off
