It's definitely high. You can get a regular inground pool for the same price. I guess the savings in taxes is worth it?? The pavers is going to be another few grand around it too.
I need a variance for an in ground pool- from everyone I spoke to its going to be a battle and it's not my forever house so it's not worth it to me

We installed a semi-inground pool last summer.
On May 5th, Fernando is coming to do the pavers. We are building up most of the yard with pavers to make the pool and the pavers all level...and turn my semi-inground into an inground pool.
Do your research on 3 Brother's pools. Several HORRIBLE reviews!! We went EVERYWHERE to search for our pool. Wound up at LI Pool and Spas. They are really good with their customer service too.
You will need a permit for the pool and it took MONTHS to get. You have to get a certified electrician; your LIPA (or whomever your electrical is from) need to come do a "hot stick test" to measure the distance from your electrical lines to where you want to place your pool (THIS IS A HUGE STEP...DO THIS FIRST!! MANY PEOPLE FIND THEY CAN'T EVEN PUT IN A POOL BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE ENOUGH CLEARANCE); a pool alarm on the edge of the pool; an automatic gate closure with a lock; inside the house door alarm that leads to your yard; a FULLY ENCLOSED PVC FENCED YARD (new laws do NOT allow wooden fences as they are considered climbable) and some other stuff I do not even remember anymore. The pool company will NOT tell you any of this. DO NOT SKIP THE PERMIT PROCESS!! I know SEVERAL PEOPLE from all different towns on LI that got busted with illegal pools and had to have them removed!! The permit process was a colossal headache and cost several hundred dollars but you have to do it. The pool itself was $12,000 but we had to hire a private installer as the bobcat to dig couldn't fit through my breezeway. All told, the pool alone (with permit and installation) was about $17,000. The pavers are costing another $21,000. We opted not to go inground (though this will be inground once the pavers have been completed) because I already pay a ridiculous amount of taxes and didn't want to increase them.
Good luck!! Its a VERY long process. But just realize that starting now might bring you all the way till the end of August for your install.

When did they change the fence requirements? We had our inspection last year for an inground and we have a chain link around our yard. (I just looked up the code and chain link is still on there).

We had our pool installed last summer (I believe the inspection was last May). The inspector told us on the phone that no other fence besides PVC was an acceptable enclosure around a backyard containing a pool. We had PVC on one side and wood on the other 2, but the wood fence was severely damaged in hurricane Sandy, so we replaced the fence and put all PVC. When the inspector came to do the inspection he said that the town of Hempstead no longer allowed anything but PVC for a pool enclosure because all other fences (wood and chain link) were considered climbable. He said pool laws became VERY strict because of 2 accidental LI drownings early last summer. Though this particular inspector is known to be a real hard ass, so who knows.

This is from TOH website
In all Residence zones, fencing when used, as a pool enclosure must be non-climbable, Stockade or PVC fencing shall have all horizontal members facing the pool. Chain link fencing may not have mesh larger than 2.25 square inches or may have privacy slats.
Just wanted to clarify for the OP. Each town is different bc Brookhaven allows the stockade to have either side facing out
