International travel can i use cell phone
Anyone use an iphone abroad? Any recommendations on how to do this?

I used mine when I went to the Caribbean. I have an iphone with Verizon. I called them to pay for an extra service that I was able to cancel when I got home.
Call your phone carrier and they can help you.

Yes, but it can be quite expensive. where are you going and how long are you staying? It may make sense to buy an unlocked phone and a local sim card. I did this in India and it cost me about 100 bucks for a android smart phone.

It depends on where you're going and your carrier. There's no blanket answer. On some plans, for example the USVI are free which is great. Some AIs are starting to feature free calls over WiFi which is nice

We just got back from St. Lucia and didn't have anything other than WiFi. I've heard that with the iPhone you can download Viber and that it works pretty well. My friend's brother used it in Ireland and had no problems with it.

I am going to Italy.
I do not trust my cell carrier because I tried setting up an international plan for my mom when she went to Israel and her phone did not work once she was there.
Someone at work told me to try Viper too I just dont want to get there and not be able to call home. I need to be reachable. Can anyone tell me about SIM Card? ETS going about 10days.

Like others said it depends on where. It can work in Caribbean, but you are going to be paying a ton in roaming charges. I just use the wifi for when in the room.
We have use Skype. Much cheaper

The problem with an iPhone is you can't remove the SIM card. Viber works really well if the wifi is good. You obviously won't be able to us it without wifi or while touring. Do you know anyone who travels a lot and maybe could lend you an unlocked phone?

Just got back from Barcelona & used my iPhone thru verizon. Without issue. I signed up for a discounted calling plan for $4.99 a month which included .99 a minute calling which is better then the rate without plan. I also got a data plan for $25 for emergency emails. If using wifi, you can use iMessage & internet free
