If you learned chess or taught your child,
at what age did you do it?

If you learned chess or taught your child,
I remember there being the chess set out from a very young age... I remember probably being 5/6 when I was taught what the different pieces were called, 7 definitely when I learned what each piece does (their moves)... Am I good? lol, I have no idea, I only ever played with family.

If you learned chess or taught your child,
Chess is war and war is Chess. All good military strategists and leaders play Chess! LOL
Yes I have had a Chess board out forever. But as a 'girl' they didn't see a need to teach me. My father thought differently when I got a little older. I had already learned their names and moves. So I would play him. It was challenging and bonding. My step mother put an end to it.
I played online for a bit. Its been YEARS since I've looked at it.
I never thought about introducing it to AJ. At 5 I don't think she'd care. I think when she gets older and wants to play 'games' then I will show it to her. She's not even interested in computer games or console games. Right now its about reading and bingo!

I taught DS how to play chess at around age 8 or so.

Re: If you learned chess or taught your child,
DH taught DS when he was not yet 5. He was always good with puzzles and games at a very young age. DS knew what he was doing because I remembered him arguing with DH. Of course, DS is not always right.

If you learned chess or taught your child,
My father taught my son at 3. I thought it was a lot to expect from him...but he picked it up after a few tries. We try and play with him after that, even if games were not completed...just to keep an idea of what pieces move where. At 7, he is the youngest on his chess team. I have a 4 yr old daughter though...and teaching her is completely different. Zero interest.

If you learned chess or taught your child,
We have a chess program in the school I work at. Students start learning chess in 1st grade. Some teachers start in K. I would say at about 5 years old its good to introduce the game and start showing the child how the pieces move. Play the pawn game at first.
