Thanks to those who answered. It's nice to see we're not alone in this boat.

I don't think it can hurt him to apply and see what happens. It seems like they're taking him for granted and maybe if they seem him looking elsewhere they'll get more serious. If not, then it seems like they never will anyway. Seems like they're stringing him along bc they can.

I did a leave replacement as my very first job that was the first half of the school year. The following september they called me about a job but it was part time. I told them I was really looking for full time and a few days later they called and offered me full time. It was a crazy situation split between three schools and all different forms of special ed so I ended up taking another job. That was 10 years ago but still, in all this time I think they should step up for him. Times are different and districts are avoiding giving full time positions at all costs to save money. If he can find a full time position elsewhere, I'd go for it. I don't think that would make it impossible for him to get back into his original district down the road but I'm sure every district is different and some may be petty about it. If that's the case, I'd rather go elsewhere anyway.

Re: I'm not a Teacher, but DH . . .

I am not a teacher but I do think he should take the other job and IF the full time english teaching job comes up apply for that. They cannot expect him to sit his life out waiting for the possibility that they MIGHT throw him a bone. Plus I think it shows initiative that he is not happy to settle for part time and then he would be a serious candidate for the english teaching job.

What IF this time next year he is still at this school teaching special ed part time, the english teaching job comes up and they give it to someone else - how mad is he going to feel then?

Go for it and good luck to your DH.Chat Icon

THANK YOU!!

Yes, no guarantees he will get the full-time position either, but he does have an interview this week and I have a good feeling about it. Who knows though, there is always somebody else with "connections."

They are definitely stringing him along and I would love nothing more than for him to leave them in a total lurch (without a coach for the sports he coaches and without him as a completely reliable leader for the clubs he is involved with, and without a chaperone for all the school trips he goes on! The list goes on and on). He has gone above and beyond for this place and they do not treat him well at all. I wish there were more job openings and he could have his pick of them without the fear of getting excessed. Chat Icon

You are so right and with his luck this is exactly what would happen. He would pass up the full time opportunity and then continue getting strung along at his current school. This is so hard.

And I guess he doesn't have job security either way. As a part-time teacher or as a full-timer, right away at least. It's really eating me up what he has to deal with. I spent the last 10 years just being glad he has a job. When will things get better for teachers?

I stopped reading at "sped." Hopefully your husband doesn't refer to special education as "sped."

Apologies, I actually thought that was an acceptable shortening of the term "special ed" (guess not?), but I've edited the original post. Thanks anyway.

Relax. I've heard a lot of people refer to it that way, myself included, and I'm a special education teacher. It's simply an abbreviation, not a derogatory term. I'm sure she meant no harm. To say you stopped reading is very dramatic.

Teachergal - thanks, I was feeling so terrible I took my original post down. If you had time to read it before I did that, I'd still be interested in your take. I feel like we've really been through the ringer and that put me over the top. Sigh.

My opinion is to try for a full time position. I know he feel so tied to the district and loves it there, but my experience sitting on hiring committees in my district is that sometimes administrators get too comfortable with people being in certain situations and those people get pigeon-holed. If nothing else, looking outside the district for a full time position will let his administrators know that he means business and won't just continue to settle for part-time. Good luck! I know it's not easy. Chat Icon

Whenever I interoffice mail at work I write PPS/SpEd Dept. Should I not be doing that? What's the proper abbreviation? You have me nervous now that I've doing something wrong...

OP - I am so sorry you are dealing with this. I went down the road your DH did although not for as long, and I cannot imagine dealing with it for 8 years.

I read your post earlier and did not have a chance to respond, so I don't remember if he was offered the other job or just is considering applying for it. I echo the others - they have strung him on too long, and frankly, he should search with as much fervor as he would if he weren't employed at all. I agree with the poster who said subs and other personnel of a temporary nature often get pigeonholed and then he could very well be out of luck in the district.

I have been in the field for about seven years and have never heard of that term being derogatory. Of course, it's possible I just haven't heard. If it is, I would have loved to know about more about it. However, when you could have taken the opportunity to educate people, you instead chose to make a clearly stressed poster feel worse when it was obvious that she meant no harm. But, then again, you wouldn't really know much about her situation because you stopped reading, right?

You then declined to explain yourself. So, it's not worth your time to educate others, but it's worth your time to make someone whose family's livelihood is at stake feel like shit?

I think that was a lousy thing to do and I'd expect more from any teacher. Especially a "sped" teacher.

SpEd (sped, Sped) is an extremely common and acceptable way to abbreviate special education

Re: I'm not a Teacher, but DH . . .

I didn't see the OP but got the just of it.

I work in a similar field, and just marking my one year yesterday at a job who totally appreciates me, I have had a chance to reflect back on all the jobs, one in particular, that I wasted time and energy at when I was just a dime a dozen to them.

I also heard all the promises but in my last, it just never became reality.

I am now a huge advocate for moving on if the right opportunity presents itself.

I also feel that even if we have a job we like, we should always be keeping our eyes open to what else is out there.

There a good chance that this time next year my position may be going away due to changes on a systemic level of who will no longer qualify for services.

We will probably lose more than 2/3 of our clients if these changes go through. Maybe even more.
