Schools that use Orton-Gillingham? Dyslexic, APD & ADHD child

Hi, my child is dyslexic with auditory processing disorder and ADHD. Our current school district does not have any teachers trained in orton-gillingham or Wilson. My daughter needs to be taught with this multi sensory approach to learning. So...now we are looking to move to a district that has this. We have an IEP and she is currently in a co teach inclusion classroom.
I heard massapequa sd uses OG but way too $$ for houses there.
Thanks!!

Oceanside just trained a bunch of teachers in Orton and I know Middle Country has quite a few. We are in Three Village and have one or two but all the reading specialists are Wilson/Making Connections trained. Alot of the families I know in many districts do outside tutoring at DiVinci because they have some of the best reading specialists out there.

Not sure if you are familiar with Lindamood Bell's reading program, but I find it to be one of the few that truly addresses APD. They have visualizing/verbalizing and their newer program for younger children or children with less verbal ability "talkies". Lindamood Bell also addresses the orthographic issues that one can have. I just feel it's very comprehensive and truly works on the reflective piece one needs to be cognizant of as a reader. However, with all this said, I don't think there are many teachers trained in this. In fact, i was speaking to a reading specialist who had never heard of it. I looked into getting trained myself, but the training is in Albany. Dyslexia is something that even reading teachers know very little about, so to be honest you may have to look into private facilities as Karen suggested or dyslexia tutoring. Feel free to FM me, this is something I know a bit about.

Just wanted to add, Lindamood Bell has a private facility in Roslyn, and maybe one in suffolk for the summer. I also do know of a mother from another state who actually was able to have the school district fund her son's private reading program because the district didn't have an appropriate one.

Thanks! I've looked into lindamood bell and it is way too expensive. Same thing for the sappo school. We have a private tutor who is a orton gillingham specialist with a background in dyslexia and APD. But I am looking for a school district (public) that actually has staff trained in orton gillingham. My daughter needs all the help she can get and the district we are in now is horrible and not meeting her needs. No progress in 2 years.

If you could get in contact with Maryann Chatfield, she could probably help you, as she is the teacher trainer for Oceanside (and I believe may be on staff there now). Oceanside may be embracing Orton a bit more than other districts. I could not find her email but she is on facebook. Oceanside is a good school district :) I lived right on the borderline of Oceanside.

This is the email for Dawn Nieman who is also a trainer with Maryann Chatfield (not sure if it's an updated one or not but she also is on facebook) [email protected].

Lindamood Bell is the absolute best but yes it is crazy expensive. Just a suggestion and I really don't know all the "correct" terminology for Dyslexia, but alot of the children in my district that have severe dyslexia also get speech therapy. The speech therapist works with the reading specialist to help will decoding the words.

I am a certified Wilson teacher as well as a special education teacher. i have been teaching WIlson for the past several years, most particularly 1:1 with dyslexic students. Feel free to ask me any questions. FM me for the district I work in as we provide it (Wilson) for our students. (We also use Wilson's Fundations program for our general education students. )

Also, you can contact Wilson directly (www.wilsonlanguage.com). They can direct you to a Wilson certified teacher in your area. Many of us do or will provide the service privately in a tutoring capacity. By calling WIlson directly, you are guaranteeing that the teacher went through the entire certification and practicum process through Wilson. Al lot of teachers will say that have knowledge of the WIlson program, but are far from certified. Also, if you have a dyslexia diagnosis, you may be able to get CSE to provide multi-sensory reading instruction to your DC even though no one in the district is certified. They could pay for it by using an outside provider. they are required to provide your child with the services that they need so with a dyslexia diagnosis, you should be able to get them to provide something that address that need either via an outside provider OR they may have to pay for a teacher(S) to get certified in a program such as Wilson, OG or Lindamood Bell.

Again, FM if you need anything.

I am OG and Wilson certified. The School for Language and Communication Development in Glen Cove requires all of their staff to have it. It's a great school - I worked there for 7 years and still do in the summer. I definitely recommend looking into it.

This doesn't answer your question, but instead of moving to a different district, I'd suggest to your CSE that they are not meeting the needs of your DD and that she should be allowed to attend a school in another district, or even one of the private schools that will meet her needs, at their expense. 2 years with no progress is unacceptable.

Thank you all for the info! I went to the cse armed with tons of rights and laws and I recorded the meeting. Not sure why this meeting was different but they agreed to every accommodation I requested! They are bringing in a Wilson certified instructor twice a week for 1:1 instruction, giving her an iPad with speech to text apps, educational apps etc, a scribe for extended note taking or essay writing, 1:1 tests given verbally and verbal answers etc...
So, we will be staying in out district another year to see how it goes. I am hoping with the new accommodations (hopefully better 3rd grade teachers) and her private tutor we will have some success.
Fingers crossed!! : )

Yay...glad it worked out. Also for wilson it is recommended, to have it 3 tims per week for 60 minutes per session. At minimum, I would want as the teacher 3 45 minute sessions per week, in an ideasl world an hour per session.
