Broken AC at daycare
Okay, I need a check to see if I'm overreacting.
Went to pick up my 2.5 year old from daycare yesterday and the AC was broken and not working in his room. His face was red and sweaty. As soon as we got in the car, he asked for juice and drank a whole juice box without stopping--never done that before!
Talked to the director who told me the AC was broken for a part of the day but now fixed and that the kids spent extra time in the gym where it was cool.
When I asked his teacher this morning, she said that nope, no extra time in gym yesterday and that she complained about how uncomfortable the room was.
Also, DS took a 3+ hour nap at daycare yesterday--I'm assuming bc he was so hot and lethargic? He never naps so long!
This morning, the AC is still broken (1 of the 2 units is working, but room still feels hot and muggy at 8:30). I'm going to go down there today and "talk" to director again.
But before I do, am I being crazy and over-reacting? Isn't this a health issue?

Broken AC at daycare
I would be a bit annoyed that I was told one thing by the director and than another by his teacher but not because the ac was broken - things happen.
The ac still not being fixed this morning I would let slide - they need time to get someone to come in and look at it.
I wouldn't say it is a health issue - lots of schools do not have ac in their class rooms. DS's does not - we are just asked to send in an extra bottle of water for them to drink through out the day.

I don't like that she lied to you to cover it up. That is not cool. I also don't like that he was so thirsty when you picked him up. With the AC broken they should have been offering them extra water.

Um, that's horrible. You saw the truth. Your child was hot and dehydrated. Plus, they lied to you. Not trustworthy, IMO.

I'm not sure about the health issue, but I'd be pissed that the director lied about your LO being in the gym...Shady.

Broken AC at daycare
How hot was it? Humid
Our kids are outside and in the gym running like mad hatters all day and they are required water breaks. 80s isn't enough to get red faced unless its humid or they've been running around.
I'd be ticked at the lying part (serious pet peeve) and that AC had best be fixed by now. Id want to know their hydration methods. Our school as clearly marked and aggressively followed hydration breaks. So much AJ used to get mad at first because she was in the middle of whatever and they'd stop her for a water break.
I'm a mean one, I'd bring up the lie. One of them isn't telling the truth and My kid is the one suffering.
Hydration is the most important part tho!

I'd be pissed. 1) because the director lied to you and 2) because your LO was hot and dehydrated.
A/C was broken, ok, but they should find a way to keep the kids cool and hydrated.

Broken AC at daycare
By law the daycare cannot operate if the air is outside of certain temps.
The only reason I even know this is because my DSs daycare had to close one day because they had no heat.
I would def have issue.

I agree with this, especially the extra water part if it was indeed that hot.
Things happen, a/c's break, but I don't like the lying to cover it. That's what would bother me.

Broken AC at daycare
As others have said, the broken ac would not bother me as long as it's fixed in a reasonable timeframe. The fact you were lied to would definitely cause me concern.

Really? I wonder how schools get away with no a/c. It's REALLY hot in the schools, my kids come home practically lethargic!

I don't think it applies to schools just licensed daycares.

Re: Broken AC at daycare
i would be pissed that I was lied to but having a broken AC happens and getting it fixed may take time. They should be making sure that the kids are hydrated though. Thats ridiculous.

Re: Broken AC at daycare
Yeah, the lying thing bothers me more than anything else. Like I told the director, stuff happens that's not in your control, like the AC breaking. It's the stuff that IS within your control like the communication to parents, keeping kids as cool as possible, that made me really upset.
Ugh...there were lots of little things that bugged me and now the teachers in my son's classroom are privately telling me things about the administration/management staff that's making me uncomfortable.
I think I'm going to have to start looking for other options. :-/

Elementary schools definitely have different regulations from child care centers (daycare). I looked up the regulations and it states that the centers have to be heated and well-ventilated. A minimum temperature is specified (68 degrees) but there's no actual requirement for AC or a top temperature, just "well-ventilated."
Also, I think infants/toddlers need more of a regulated temperature controlled environment, just bc they're too little to verbalize their discomfort or do anything about it, you know?

It sounds like you're having multiple issues there. I would be looking for a new center. Good luck!
